MOUNTAIN VIEW – A 22-year-old Mountain View man was arrested on suspicion of trying to break into his neighbor’s apartment following an hours-long standoff Tuesday morning, police said.
The incident happened just before 12:25 a.m. at an apartment building in the 1000 block of El Monte Avenue, according to the Mountain View Police Department. The victims told police the suspect was trying to break into their apartment through a shared wall.
Police said the victims did not know the man prior to the incident.
Officers arrived to find the suspect still trying to break into the apartment, as well as holding a knife, according to police. He ignored their commands and barricaded himself inside his apartment.
Crisis Negotiations and Special Weapons and Tactics teams were called to the scene just after 1 a.m., police said. Several residents were also asked to evacuate or shelter in place.
Following hours of negotiations, the man was arrested around 5:50 a.m., according to police.
He was treated at the scene for minor injuries he suffered prior to his arrest and taken to an area hospital for further treatment, police said. No other injuries were reported.
The man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, burglary and vandalism, according to police.
