The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have produced several offensive minds that have gone onto pastures new. This year could see another Buccaneers coach make such a move.
Grizzard’s Impact on a Recharged Buccaneers Offense
Many fans thought that the loss of Liam Coen would derail an offense that had once been one of the NFL’s best. However, the emergence of Josh Grizzard has put those thoughts to rest. He has led the Buccaneers to a 6-4 start and has them as one of the league’s best offenses through 10 games. The Buccaneers are scoring 25.2 points per game and utilizing every weapon at their position. Therefore, it should be no coincidence that his stock as a potential head coaching candidate has risen so drastically.
What has been so special about the emergence of Josh Grizzard has been his ability to incorporate so many different pieces into this Buccaneers offense. The rise of rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka has helped compensate for the loss of other receivers such as Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to injury. This has led to several reasons as to why Grizzard has turned heads.
Remember, the last two Buccaneers offensive coordinators found new homes as head coaches. Dave Canales, who is fondly remembered for rejuvenating the career of Baker Mayfield, found a new home with the Panthers, and now has them as a potential threat to the Buccaneers in the NFC South. Liam Coen stepped up to the plate and more than filled Canale’s shoes. Now he is with Jacksonville, who find themselves 6-4 and second in the AFC South, firmly in the thick of the AFC playoff picture. With Grizzard, it may come down to the potential openings available to him, but chances are he could land a decent job where he could potentially find immediate success.
Potential Landing Spots and the Risks Ahead
Should Grizzard’s name continue to be talked about in head coaching discussions, there could be some intriguing teams interested. The Miami Dolphins have seen an uptick in performance over the past few weeks, but if they fall back to earth again, chances are Mcdaniel are out. However, Grizzard may not want to step into what could be a messy relationship with the owners. Brian Callahan is already out the door in Tennessee, and former No. 2 overall pick Cam Ward could be highly intriguing to work with. Still, if the Titans aren’t willing to build around him and invest in young talent, the Buccanneers ship could fall off the rails quickly.
If there is one job that could come open that could be a real challenge, it would be the Saints. While Kellen Moore is only in his first season, the Saints organization may grow weary if the team doesn’t steadily improve over the next few weeks. If so, that could put Moore on the hot seat. Grizzard could find himself in a situation where he has a young QB to work with, but not much infrastructure elsewhere and a fight against the salary cap on his hands.
Overall, Bucs fans may not be thrilled with the noise surrounding Grizzard and the Buccanneers. Still, it could be exciting to see where he ends up should the noise continue.
