Kodai Senga Tabbed as Mets Top Trade Option This Offseason

All eyes are on the New York Mets this offseason. After missing the playoffs in 2025, the front office will be hellbent on making the necessary additions through either the free agent market or via trades.

David Stearns already has some massive decisions about the current roster, which includes what to do with the first baseman, Pete Alonso, and Edwin Diaz’s free agency. And recently, rumors have popped up that starting pitcher Kodai Senga could be a top trade candidate this offseason.

Will the Mets Trade Kodai Senga This Offseason?

The idea of the New York Mets moving on from starter Kodai Senga about a year ago would be an asinine thought. However, his trade status has changed, with reports by The Athletic’s Will Sammon that Senga garnered a fair amount of trade interest at last week’s GM meetings in Las Vegas.

Bleacher Report piggybacked off that report, and writer Kerry Miller named Kodai Senga as the Mets’ top trade option this offseason:

“They already have almost too many options for their rotation, but only rookie Nolan McLean seems worth getting excited about. For every arm they sign, they may look to get rid of (at least) one currently on the roster. And they could surely get more than just salary relief if they moved Senga.”

Senga had a stellar rookie campaign in 2023, where he was named an All-Star and posted a 2.98 ERA in 29 starts. However, injuries limited him to just one start in 2024, and a hamstring issue popped up in 2025 around mid-June. Senga was enjoying another great season, but a rough September with the Mets has now drawn question marks about his future.

He is also 32 years old, which doesn’t help his cause if he’s already showing that he can be vulnerable to injury.

New York Mets Starting Rotation Outlook

If the Mets want to get back to the MLB playoffs in 2026, the starting rotation must be addressed in some capacity.

David Peterson and Clay Holmes are the top starter options for New York, and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing because Peterson is coming off a strong season, the Mets dealt with a handful of injuries last season in the rotation, which caused the team to bring up more unproven arms like Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat.

The Mets will inevitably be linked to many top-dollar arms, as Steve Cohen is the most savvy owner in MLB when it comes to spending, but the next part is getting those potential signings right.

New York just had to DFA Frankie Montas, who was on the books for $17 million, because he’s going to miss the entirety of the 2026 season.
