Bears coach Ben Johnson played coy Friday morning when asked whether cornerback Jaylon Johnson would return from groin surgery to play Sunday against the Steelers.
Johnson has been practicing for the last week and must be put on the 53-man roster in the next two weeks or be lost for the season. The Bears plan on him returning soon — it’s a matter of when.
“Like I said all along, we’re gonna be really smart with all of these guys that are out there,” Ben Johnson said Friday.
It would be unusual for the Bears to activate Johnson, who has played part of one game and two weeks of practice since the start of training camp, and ask him to play twice in five days. After Sunday’s game, the Bears play the Eagles on “Black Friday.”
“We’ve been very smart this week,” Johnson said. “We scaled back the volume a little bit just with that in mind out on the practice field while still getting the work in. Hopefully that will help out.”
