The New York Giants will ride out Mike Kafka as their head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season, but after that, it’s likely anybody’s gig.
There’s expected to be a wide-ranging search for the franchise’s next on-field leader, spearheaded by Giants brass, including general manager Joe Schoen, Chris Mara, John Mara, Steve Tisch, and Tim McDonnell, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
The job is expected to be “highly coveted,” thanks to the young foundational pieces littered across the roster.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, star-in-the-making wide receiver Malik Nabers, and a star-studded defensive line, to name a few of the draws.
But what candidates are out there that make sense for the job?
Jon Gruden Would Be ‘Very Interested’ in Giants Job
If the New York Giants are looking for a head coach with experience and a Super Bowl ring to back it up, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden makes a lot of sense.
And according to his brother, Jay Gruden, Jon would be “very interested” to coach Big Blue.
“I think he’d be very interested [in the Giants’ head coaching job]. He loves Jaxson Dart,” Gruden said on Underdog’s The Arena.
“If you want a guy to run RPOs and zone reads, he’s not your guy. If you want a guy to come in the building and challenge your quarterback every day, with personnel groupings, formations, snap counts, motions – a way to develop the quarterback the right way – then yeah, I’d be interested in having Jon come coach my team.”
Gruden would certainly be a hire with a proven track record.
As an NFL head coach, he has a record of 117-112, in stints with the Bucs and the Raiders from 1998-2007 and 2018-2021.
Gruden is also famous for his work with quarterbacks and even has a prior relationship with Dart thanks to an appearance on his Barstool Sports show, Gruden’s QB Class.
There would certainly be some hoops to jump through thanks to ongoing litigation between Gruden and the NFL stemming from his 2021 midseason resignation.
But other than that, it seems like the former Super Bowl-winning head coach would be a perfect fit in New York.
What Are the Giants Looking for in a Head Coach?
According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the New York Giants will be looking for specific traits throughout their head coaching interview process.
“Conventional wisdom suggests the Giants covet an offensive-minded coach — someone to groom Dart for the next decade. But that’s not the case. They tried that with Brian Daboll, and it didn’t work,” wrote Hughes.
“The Giants now want a CEO-type coach — someone with command of all three phases of the game. They want a leader who can capture the locker room and master the details to tilt close games in their favor. New York is 3-12 in one-score games since 2023, including four blown 10-point leads this season.”
While Gruden certainly comes across as an offensive-minded head coach, he’s been in and around the game so long that he certainly understands all sides of football.
He hired some quality coaches for his most recent tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders, including Rich Bisaccia, who is widely considered one of the better special teams coordinators in all of football.
If Gruden can come to New York and build out a competent staff, the Giants are just a few roster moves away from being back in playoff contention.
