Chiefs Announce Patrick Mahomes News After Colts Matchup

The Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts went head-to-head on Sunday, November 23, at Arrowhead Stadium for what was an important game for the Chiefs, and they won, in overtime, 23-20. The Colts’ record heading into the game was a lofty 8-2 and tops in the AFC South, while the Chiefs were 5-5, so this was a crucial matchup for Kansas City. Indianapolis has been something of a sleeper hit this season, spearheaded by quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor, and while the Chiefs have always been hot, it’s been a lukewarm season for them.

Before the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes caused a bit of a stir with comments that could have been perceived as taking a shot at Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Ahead of the Colts game, Mahomes spoke about Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Mahomes said, “What makes him such a great DC is that he tailors his scheme to the team. He wants to go with their strengths. He’s not stuck in his ways of how he calls a game.”

But, all of that aside, during the game, the Chiefs made NFL history in a big way. So, there’s reason to celebrate.

Patrick Mahomes Makes History With the Kansas City Chiefs

In the second quarter of the game, Mahomes hit 35,000 career passing yards, making him the fastest player in NFL history to achieve that honor. The NFL took to X to announce the news during the game, and the Kansas City Chiefs followed with their own announcement.

It’s just the latest honor in his length career that’s been packed with awards. To date, Mahomes has notched two NFL MVPs, three Super Bowl MVPs, three Super Bowl titles and six Bro Bowl selections.

Those in the Chiefs’ camp took to social media to react to the news, and plenty of them were more focused on the Chiefs winning the game than Mahomes’ latest honor. “Can we not do the distraction posts today? WTH is up with our play calling man,” one said on Instagram. “Man I’m just so lost as to what actually happened to us,” another said, referring to the Chiefs being down in the first half. “Ok but can we win a game?” one more said.

Kansas City Chiefs and Colts Go Into Overtime

Just when the Chiefs thought it was over, Mahomes pulled off the impossible and led the team into over time against the Colts.

“Well, we’ve got extra football at Arrowhead: Patrick Mahomes drives the Chiefs all the way to the Colts’ 3-yard line, but Indy stands firm and ultimately takes down No. 15, with Kwity Paye and Laiatu Latu splitting a third-and-goal sack,” Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports noted in a play-by-play feature.

He added, “Harrison Butker’s subsequent field goal sends us to overtime. It’s 20-20. Let’s see if K.C. can complete the comeback.”

The Chiefs had been tailing for the entire game, with the Colts on fire, thanks to their quarterback, Jones, who “opened this game with top-tier composure, effortlessly reading and dissecting the Chiefs’ defense,” Benjamin noted.
