GOP Congressman Slams State Department: “Some People Better Get Fired”

Sec. Marco Rubio

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that the United States “authored” a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. On social media, Rubio wrote that the plan “is based on input from the Russian side. But it is also based on previous and ongoing input from Ukraine.”

Several lawmakers saw the largely pro-Russia plan differently, including Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD), who spoke to Rubio by phone. Rounds said of his call with the Secretary: “I think he made it very clear to us that we are the recipients of a proposal that was delivered to one of our representatives. It is not our recommendation, it is not our peace plan.”

U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) added: “The leaked 28-point plan, which, according to @SecRubio, is not of the administration’s position–it is essentially the wish list of the Russians.”

State Department spokesman Tommy Piggett responded to King’s statement: “This is blatantly false. As Secretary Rubio and the entire Administration has consistently maintained, this plan was authored by the United States, with input from both the Russians and Ukrainians.”

U.S. Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) responded Piggett’s post: “Some people better get fired on Monday for the gross buffoonery we just witnessed over the last four days. This hurt our country and undermined our alliances, and encouraged our adversaries.”

Others are also weighing in on the plan. Civil rights attorney Andrew Laufer replied to Bacon: “The Ukrainians would never agree to such a plan.”

Former CIA intelligence analyst Sarah Adams replied: “The administration can’t even get on the same page about counterterrorism which is insane, and now they’re showing they are just as fractured on Ukraine. They still won’t be honest about this so-called plan, which is already shaping up to be no better than the garbage deal they cut with Hamas or the failed Doha Deal with the Taliban that they refuse to finally terminate. And instead of holding real press briefings, they hide behind X posts and staged Fox interviews to ‘inform’ the public.”

Former congressional attorney Mike Stern added: “The president is not going to lead so it is up to Congress, specifically the patriots remaining among congressional Republicans, to do so.”
