Red Sox Prediction Has Boston Landing $145 Million Bat in Middle of the Lineup

There are multiple needs for the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Craig Breslow could use a starting pitcher to slot at the top or right in the middle of the rotation with Garrett Crochet and Bryan Bello.

Maybe a bigger need is a power-hitting bat. That is something the Red Sox are missing in the middle of the order, and something Jorge Castillo of ESPN wrote that Breslow is going to look to add.

“The Red Sox president of baseball operations, Craig Breslow, has made it clear: He wants to acquire an accomplished middle-of-the-order bat, preferably a right-handed one. Trading Devers, combined with Alex Bregman’s free agency, has left the Red Sox without much proven slugger in their lineup. A reunion with Bregman would check that box. As would signing Alonso, who could split time at first base and DH with Casas if Boston were to keep him,” Castillo wrote.

Bregman would check that box, but as Castillo pointed out, so would Pete Alonso of the New York Mets. Bleacher Report predicted each team’s Opening Day lineup, and it has Boston making a big addition this offseason.

Pete Alonso Predicted to Be Red Sox Opening Day Clean-Up Hitter

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report predicted each Opening Day lineup, and his prediction for the Red Sox has Alonso batting clean-up. He is the only offseason addition that he has in Alex Cora’s first lineup of 2026. Here is his projected lineup,

LF Roman Anthony
CF Jarren Duran
SS Trevor Story
1B Pete Alonso
DH Masataka Yoshida
RF Wilyer Abreu
C Carlos Narváez
3B Marcelo Mayer
2B Ceddanne Rafaela

Reuer has the Red Sox keeping Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu in the outfield. There has been some discussion as to whether or not one would be traded to create some space in the outfield. However, Reuter explains why both would remain on Breslow’s roster.

“If Pete Alonso does not once again find his way back to the Mets, the Red Sox appear to be his most likely landing spot, which would in turn make Triston Casas one of the more intriguing buy-low candidates on the trade market,” Reuter wrote.

“They also still have a logjam in the outfield, which could mean Gold Glove winner Ceddanne Rafaela sees more action at second base and less in the grass, though there are a lot of moving parts to what figures to be a busy offseason in Boston.”

Pete Alonso Continues to Be Mentioned For the Red Sox

If Alonso signs, it likely means Alex Bregman is playing somewhere else in 2026 and beyond. Alonso at Fenway Park would be fun for fans with his ability to use the Green Monster.

This past season for the Mets, Alonso had 38 home runs and a career-high 41 doubles. Those numbers could certainly increase with 81 games at Fenway. He slashed .272/.3347/.524 in 2025 in a contract year with 170 hits.

Earlier this month, Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report predicted that Alonso would cash in this winter in free agency. He predicted a five-year, $145 million deal for the power-hitting first baseman. That would be a home run deal for the Red Sox. Regardless, he is a perfect fallback option for Boston should Bregman land somewhere else next season.
