Dolphins Get Good News on TE Darren Waller Amid Post-Bye Injury Updates

The 2025 campaign hasn’t exactly been all that great for the Miami Dolphins, but they finally generated some positive momentum ahead of their bye week in Week 12. With wins over the Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders in their two most recent games, the Dolphins finally have something they can build off of moving forward.

It hasn’t necessarily been pretty, but Miami has shown some fight over the past couple of weeks, and with some favorable games coming up on the schedule, it could rattle off a nice little win streak. Making things even better for the Dolphins is that they are getting healthy, as it sounds like they could be set to get a key offensive playmaker, tight end Darren Waller, back from injury in the near future.

Dolphins Set to Open Darren Waller’s Practice Window

Waller surprisingly came out of retirement before the 2025 campaign, and he ended up getting traded from the New York Giants to the Miami Dolphins. While Waller was one of the top tight ends in the league during his prime, he wasn’t nearly as effective before he retired after spending the 2023 campaign with the Giants.

His return was delayed by a hamstring injury, but once Waller got back on the field, he quickly made an impact for the Dolphins. In four games, Waller caught 10 passes for 117 yards, but he made the most of those receptions, as four of them went for touchdowns. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa loves throwing to his tight ends, so it wasn’t a total surprise to see Waller become one of his favorite targets right off the bat.

A pectoral injury disrupted Waller’s momentum and resulted in him landing on injured reserve. After missing the past month of action, though, Waller has made some serious progress when it comes to getting back on the field. Case in point, head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Monday that the team will open Waller’s practice window later this week.

“Dolphins TE Darren Waller’s practice window will open Wednesday, per Mike McDaniel — but there’s no timeline to return for OL James Daniels,” Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN shared in a post on X. “McDaniel says OL Andrew Meyer’s window will open at some point in the near future but there’s no change for OL Liam Eichenberg.”

What Does the Future Hold for Darren Waller with the Dolphins?

Waller’s return to the NFL has been brief to this point, but he is on track to at least return and close out the season with the Dolphins. What happens after the 2025 campaign wraps up, though, is as good as anyone’s guess. Should Waller want to continue playing football, he’d be set for unrestricted free agency, but considering how he’s already retired once, he could opt to call it a career for good.

Right now, Waller’s main focus is on finding a way to get back on the field as soon as possible. Whether or not he will be able to play in Week 13 remains to be seen, but he’s going to have a shot to suit up for Miami’s upcoming game. When the team returns to action on Sunday afternoon, it will be squaring off against the New Orleans Saints, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
