Giants’ Jameis Winston Offers Position Change Once Jaxson Dart Returns

Jameis Winston is one of the most beloved players across the National Football League, and it’s not hard to see why.

His energy and attitude are infectious, and it’s certainly something every team values in a quarterback, whether he’s the backup or the starter.

Winston would do anything for his team, as evidenced by his (serious?) offer to play tight end for the New York Giants once rookie Jaxson Dart is cleared to return from his concussion.

“I like to consider myself an athlete. I believe that I can make plays like that for this team. If I need to play tight end, I can. I’ll do whatever it is that’s required for this team to have success,” Winston said in his post-game press conference.

Jameis Winston to Tight End?

Winston’s reference to playing tight end likely comes from his miraculous touchdown catch and run in the fourth quarter of the New York Giants‘ loss to the Detroit Lions.

On a designed trick play, Giants wide receiver Gunner Olszewski threw a pass to Winston, who took it 20 yards to the end zone while draped by Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes.

It’s one of the most athletically gifted plays the NFL has seen all year, from a quarterback no less.

“I’m grateful that Kaf (Mike Kafka) gave me an opportunity, and Gunner trusted me, gave me a chance, and sometimes that’s all you gotta do at the quarterback position,” Winston continued.

The Giants’ backup quarterback put up a valiant effort in yesterday’s loss, completing 18 of 36 pass attempts for 366 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

And that’s not including his 33-yard receiving touchdown.

New York has Winston under contract for 2026, seeing him as the ideal backup and veteran mentor for Dart.

From their relationship and Winston’s attitude about wanting to do whatever he can to help the team win, it’s really a no-brainer.

“I just want to help this team win. When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team,” Winston told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan earlier in the season.

Dan Campbell Raves About Jameis Winston’s Performance

While the Detroit Lions came out on the winning end of yesterday’s overtime shootout, head coach Dan Campbell had a lot of respect for Winston and his performance.

“I thought Winston played an outstanding game. I thought he played a really, really big-time game and made a ton of throws. That’s what he’s capable of. That’s what he can do. I thought he played out of his mind,” Campbell told the media in his post-game press conference.

“We’re not always going to see that every week or get that every week. Those guys, boy, they came in to win that game. And we knew they would. They came in fighting.”

The New York Giants certainly did everything they could to pull out the victory, but another fourth-quarter collapse allowed the Lions to come storming back.

Despite that, Giants fans will remember Winston’s Week 12 effort for years to come, because he certainly left it all out on the field on Sunday.
