Law enforcement officers and community members honor Burbank police K9 named Spike
Law enforcement officers and community members are paying respect to a Burbank police K-9 named Spike, who was fatally shot and killed while pursuing a suspect over the weekend. A makeshift memorial is growing outside the Burbank Police and Fire headquarters, with candles, flowers and pictures honoring Spike.
Carrie Konjoyan, the coordinator for the 9/11 Memorial at Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks, said, “I’m sad for the loss of such a beautiful animal. I’m sad that people are mean and awful, but Spike did his job and he saved a human being, so we’ll always remember Spike.”
She added, “Remember those who serve and protect all, whether they have four legs or two legs. They’re all heroes.”

Spike had been on duty for about two years. He died after being shot by a fleeing suspect who was later killed by pursuing officers, authorities said.
The shooting occurred after the suspect failed to yield while Burbank police were conducting a traffic stop on Saturday evening in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street near the northbound 5 Freeway on-ramp, according to Lt. Derek Green of the Burbank Police Department.
The Burbank Police Department posted on social media, “With profound sadness, we share the news of the passing of our beloved K9 Spike, who courageously gave his life in the line of duty after being struck by gunfire from an armed suspect. … K9 Spike was an intelligent and devoted partner, known for his gentle nature off duty, and his tenacity and dedication while serving.”
