After the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Carolina Panthers 20â9, a post-game scuffle broke out involving Jauan Jennings and Panthers safety Treâvon Moehrig.
At first glance, it appeared that Jennings threw a punch at Moehrig. At least that is what the national broadcast picked up. However, closer review shows that Moehrig initiated the altercation by throwing the first punches, including shots aimed at Jenningsâ groin.
Moehrig and Jennings each face the possibility of an NFL punishment in the form of a fine or suspension.

Moehrig and Jennings Have Back-and-Forth Postgame
When asked after the game about Jenningsâ actions, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan kept his response straightforward: Moehrigâs behavior crossed the line, and any retaliation Jennings delivered was justified.
âThe guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls,â Shanahan said. âI was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there.â
Jennings also expressed no regret for his part in the altercation. He described Moehrigâs behavior as childish and said his own actions were simply a response.
âI was just responding to some childish behavior,â he said.
For his part, Moehrig didnât show much remorse either, claiming Jennings had been making dirty plays throughout the game and that he reacted in the only way he felt he could. He did, however, acknowledge that discipline is likely coming and indicated heâll accept whatever consequences follow.
âThere really isnât much to it. He wanted to do a little dirty stuff,â Moehrig said. âSo it is what it is.â
NFL May Use Ramsey-Chase Spitting Incident as Precedent
A strike to the groin by Moehrig could be viewed by the league as rather egregious.
The situation closely mirrors what happened last week between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals involving Jalen Ramsey and JaâMarr Chase. Ramsey threw punches at Chase, but later review revealed that Chase had spit on him first.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin commented that when someone spits on you, youâre bound to react instinctively â a sentiment echoed by both Shanahan and Jennings.
Chase initially claimed Ramsey delivered cheap shots and denied spitting, but he was ultimately suspended for one game and issued an apology. Ramsey was not suspended, though he did receive a fine.
With that precedent in mind, Jennings will likely still be fined regardless of his overall role in the altercation. Moehrig, however, could be facing a suspension, as his actions may have been even more severe than Chaseâs.
While it would be surprising to see Jennings suspended, itâs not impossible â a disappointing outcome considering he has been playing his best football in recent weeks.
The Panthers (6-6) host the top-seeded Los Angeles Rams (9-2) next week.
