
Air quality officials on Monday offered up some bad news to those in the Bay Area wanting to use the fireplace following their Thanksgiving holiday meals.
It won’t be allowed.
Residents and businesses will be banned from burning wood or manufactured logs in their fireplaces, woodstoves, outdoor fire pits and other devices on Wednesday and Thursday following the issuance of a Spare the Air Alert.
The Bay Area Air District announced the alert Tuesday morning. That will mark the third and fourth such days of 2025, according to the district. A year ago, they issued 17.
According to the National Weather Service, a high-pressure ridge that has taken place over the Pacific Coast. As the high pressure has expanded, the pollutants can become trapped closer to the surface, and create less-than-ideal air conditions.
The Air District forecast air quality to be only moderately healthy over the region on Wednesday and Thursday. It also is possible, some areas could see readings of air that is unhealthy for those sensitive groups with respiratory and cardiac issues.
Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep the windows closed to prevent allowing in dirty air.
