The Detroit Lions pulled off a win over the New York Giants on Sunday, November 23, but it wasn’t pretty. The Giants are a deflated team right now, making it through the season with an interim head coach, backup quarterback and without most of their stars, so the fact that the Lions had to go into overtime with the team is a bit jarring. But, a win is a win, and the Lions snagged a 34-27 victory.
So, the Detroit Lions are 7-4 going into their Thanksgiving game against Green Bay at 1 p.m. Eastern time. That’s a whole lot better than being 6-5. But, Green Bay is tough, and Jordan Love and company are just below the Chicago Bears in the NFC North going into the Thanksgiving holiday.
If the Lions can beat Green Bay, it will really help their case in the NFC North, so this is a must-win for the team. No pressure, right?
The Lions are blessed to have a lot of fantastic players on their squad. One of them is Jahmyr Gibbs, who some say is pretty much the team’s offense right now. On Tuesday, November 25, the Lions made an announcement about the running back.
Jahmyr Gibbs Makes Detroit Lions Franchise History
Gibbs had a massive game against the Giants. The running back closed out the game with 264 yards from scrimmage, according to ESPN research, including 219 yards on the ground on 15 carries, and three total touchdowns. On top of that, he made 11 catches for 45 yards.
Now, he’s a record setter. With that game, Gibbs, according to the Lions, notched the single-game Detroit Lions franchise record for scrimmage yards.
“Gibbs: good at football,” one follower simply said on X. “He’s so fast. What a gem, this guy,” another added.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell knows he has someone very special in Gibbs. After the game, Campbell called him “electric.”
“He’s electric, you know, and he’s a game-changer. Now, I’m going to give credit to that O-Line, because I think they really dug in today and did a good job. And receivers as always,” he added. “You don’t get those knockout runs unless your receivers are blocking. But Gibbs, he’s electric. Man, when he found a crease, he was going to the house. This was not about first downs, and picking up a few yards, you know?”
He added, “This guy is going to the house. He’s got the juice to make it happen, he’s got vision. He’s a difference maker. He was, I mean, he bailed us out today in a big way.”
Detroit Lions Players in the Spotlight and Making History
Other Lions players made history during the game, too. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson set a single-game franchise record for six quarterback hits. The Lions announced the news on Monday, November 24, with a post on social media.
Quarterback Jared Goff also made franchise history. He’s has now thrown for a touchdown in 17-straight games, the second-longest streak in franchise history, according to research from the Lions. On top of that, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown made history, reaching 500-career receptions in just 77-career games. “This marks the second-fewest games needed to accumulate 500 receptions in NFL history,” the Lions stated.
