Eagles Urged to Bench $68 Million Pro Bowler

The Philadelphia Eagles thought they signed one of the NFL’s elite centers when they gave Cam Jurgens a 4-year, $68 million contract extension in April, doing so after just one season as a full time starter.

What they’ve gotten to this point in 2025 is one of the NFL’s very worst centers and, in turn, represents one of the NFL’s worst investments.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jurgens’ 58.4 overall grade this season puts him 30th out of 38 eligible players at his position and his pass blocking has been even more miserable with a 48.3 overall grade.

“Cam Jurgens is the 3rd worst among all centers in pass protection this year,” Bleacher Report’s Thomas Petersen wrote on his official X account.

While Jurgens has battled injuries, those excuses go out the window the moment he steps on the field, where he’s done more to hurt Philadelphia’s embattled offense than help it this season.

“The Eagles are 8-3, second place in the NFC and we’re asking for the following: Kevin Patullo to be replaced at OC by a coach that was in the NFL for one season before 2025,  Cam Jurgens to be benched for Brett Toth, Tank Bigsby to receive more touches,” Philly Special’s Anthony DiBona wrote on his official X account on November 24. “But it’s all fair.”

Jurgens Stepped in for Future Hall of Famer

Where Philadelphia had the NFL’s best center for over a decade in future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Kelce, they now have one of the NFL’s worst. And they paid a ton of money for him, Super Bowl be damned.

“Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and the Eagles reached agreement today on a four-year, $68 million extension that includes $39.4 million guaranteed that contractually ties him to Philadelphia through the 2029 season,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account on April 21.

The deal made Jurgens the second highest paid center in NFL history behind just Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey, a 2-time Super Bowl champion and 2-time NFL All-Pro who signed a 4-year, $72 million contract extension with $50 million in guaranteed money in August 2024.

“(Eagles) coaching staff sees the need for offensive line changes,” Pro Fan Talk wrote on its official X account on November 25. “Cam Jurgens is struggling and becoming a target. Changes are coming.”

“Cam Jurgens is so bad,” Eagles fan Spy wrote on X. “He should not be playing unless he’s healthy. They can’t do anything from under center when he’s getting beat instantly.”

Eagles Made New Jurgens Deal Top Priority

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine was one of many who thought the Eagles needed to make Jurgens’ new contract a priority following their second Super Bowl win in the last 8 years.

“A commitment to building an elite offensive line is at the core of Howie Roseman’s blueprint for the Eagles,” Ballentine wrote. ” … (Jurgens) was drafted as the heir apparent to Jason Kelce at center. He earned Pro Bowl honors in his first year at the pivot, and the Eagles have shown their ability to spot and develop talent on the offensive line. It’s a no-brainer to get Jurgens on a long-term deal now before he gets more expensive.”
