A Long Beach father and his wife were arrested this week on suspicion of torturing and killing the man’s 14-month-old daughter at their Long Beach home earlier this month, authorities said.
Long Beach detectives began investigating on Nov. 7 after the girl had been admitted to a hospital unresponsive and showing signs of trauma, police said.
Detectives coordinated with the Department of Children and Family Services.
Later that day, the medical staff told detectives that the child was on life support and would not survive, police said. The child died three days later.
After two weeks of investigation, homicide detectives learned there had been ongoing abuse to the child and that her death was the result of that, police said.
They arrested Alfredo Munoz, 40, and Kelly Munoz, 33, on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Kelly Munoz was the child’s stepmother.
They were both booked into jail on suspicion of murder, torture and child abuse causing death, police said. The couple was being held without the possibility of bail, according to inmate records.
Detectives planned to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office next week for filing consideration, police said.
