Ex-1st Rounder Spurns Jets After Visit, Signs With Titans Instead

The lord giveth and the lord taketh.

On Tuesday, November 25, the New York Jets hosted free-agent defensive back Kaiir Elam for a visit. On Wednesday, November 26, Elam signed a contract with the Tennessee Titans.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport shared the news on social media.

Elam is a former first-round draft choice by the Buffalo Bills. He is also the son of former Jet Abram Elam. The Dallas Cowboys waived Elam over the weekend.

Jets Have Taken a Particular Interest in Adding Players With Upside

General manager Darren Mougey was hired by the Jets on January 25. In less than 12 months on the job, trends about his work habits have started to form.

One of the things he likes to do is take chances on young, talented players who have upside that hasn’t been reached to its fullest potential at the NFL level yet.

In August, he struck a trade with the Cleveland Browns for defensive tackle Jowon Briggs.

In October, he finagled a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie III. Then he acquired another pass catcher in Adonai Mitchell. Mougey played hardball with the Indianapolis Colts, refusing to do the monster Sauce Gardner trade unless AD Mitchell was included.

In the blockbuster negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys, Mougey acquired former first-round defensive lineman Mazi Smith in the Quinnen Williams deal.

Not every move that Mougey has executed has panned out — no GM has a 100% hit rate. However, his savvy maneuvering has given him calculated lottery tickets that have very low risk but very high potential upside.

He wasn’t able to add Elam to the puzzle, but there will be other future opportunities.

Bills Dump Former Jets Pass Catcher

The Bills parted ways with former Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore this week.

Buffalo announced that it signed veteran pass catcher Brandin Cooks. They dumped Moore in a corresponding roster move to create the spot.

Moore, 25, entered the league as the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. He spent the first two seasons of his career with the Jets.

Moore was heralded as a home run pick by the Jets. He was considered a first-round talent in his draft class who fell to day two. In training camp, NFL Insider Connor Hughes described him as an emerging star.

However, that star collapsed very quickly.

Issues arose between Moore and the coaching staff. Cryptic bible verses hit Moore’s various social media platforms. He complained about targets and opportunities even when the team was winning, which rubbed people the wrong way.

Ultimately, he was shipped off for a meager return, a pick swap from the third round to the second round.

Moore is once again an unrestricted free agent. If it couldn’t work in Buffalo with the reigning MVP at quarterback in Josh Allen, it’ll be curious to see where he lands next.

The former Ole Miss product has appeared in 70 games and has made 42 starts. Moore has caught 209 passes for 2,274 receiving yards and has scored 11 total touchdowns.
