The New York Knicks suffered a costly setback on Wednesday as guard Landry Shamet will miss at least four weeks with a right shoulder sprain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Shamet will be re-evaluated after one month, placing his earliest potential return shortly after Christmas.
Shamet left Saturday’s 133–121 loss to the Orlando Magic less than three minutes into the game, clutching his right arm after running into a midcourt screen set by Wendell Carter Jr. The incident mirrored the preseason dislocation Shamet suffered in October 2024 — an injury that nearly required surgery.
The collision with Carter appeared to knock the joint out of place again, immediately raising concern that the issue had resurfaced.
Breakout Stretch Cut Short for Sharpshooting Starter
Before the injury, Shamet was delivering his most impactful basketball as a Knick. He entered the game averaging 9.3 points per contest while shooting 42.4% from three, ranking among the league’s most accurate perimeter scorers over the past month.
He had logged four straight double-digit scoring performances, including a 36-point eruption against the Miami Heat, and hit two clutch threes plus a game-saving charge to defeat the Dallas Mavericks.

Shamet’s rapid rise under head coach Mike Brown earned him multiple starts, and teammates were quick to express their frustration at the timing of the injury.
“He’s been playing his ass off,” Knicks forward Karl-Anthony Towns told reporters. “These last couple of weeks, he’s been able to show New York why he’s so valuable. It sucks that that happened.”
Brown is optimistic about the team’s depth as they navigate the next month without Shamet.
“I’m gonna keep preaching: it’s about next-man up,” Brown told reporters after the game. “In our case, it’s next-man up, next-man up, next-man up or something like that. We have to have guys ready to play, especially some guys who haven’t played minutes. They don’t have to come in and do a lot. They just have to come in and play hard and continue trying to play the way that we play on both ends of the floor.”
Knicks Turn to Miles McBride to Fill the Void
The Knicks secured a 113–100 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday in their first game without Shamet. Miles McBride stepped into the starting lineup and scored nine points in 24 minutes after missing one game due to a personal matter.
Brown made clear that he is not looking for McBride — or anyone else — to replicate Shamet’s shooting gravity.
“We don’t expect anybody to come in and be Landry,” Brown said. “We just need guys to play hard and continue to play our style on both ends of the floor.”
The Knicks may also increasingly rely on Josh Hart, prioritizing physicality on defense at the expense of Shamet’s elite spacing.
Timing Complicates Knicks’ Looming Roster Decision
Shamet’s injury arrives amid a stretch in which the Knicks have already lost OG Anunoby for multiple weeks with a hamstring strain. As a team built around pace and shooting, New York now has to navigate at least 12 games without one of its most efficient floor spacers.
But the financial implications are just as significant.
Shamet’s contract becomes guaranteed in early January — a date that now overlaps almost exactly with his projected return window. If his shoulder recovery lags, the Knicks will need to decide whether to guarantee his deal or waive him and pursue another guard on the market.
The clock is already ticking.
