Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy continues to make steady progress in his concussion recovery. Still, as the team begins its practice week, Max Brosmer appears to be the more likely option to start Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
Brosmer has appeared in three games this season for the Vikings, but as a starter. As a result, the 24-year-old will have an opportunity to impress and see if he can get the Minnesota offense going if McCarthy is unable to go against the Seahawks in Week 13.
On November 26, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson spoke with the media and shared his thoughts on what makes Brosmer a quality quarterback, should Minnesota tap him to start under center.
“I would say his ability to make reads and really, seeing the different coverages and seeing ways that we can attack them with his arm, he has the ability to really sling it in there, and he also has the touch to loft it into a spot,” Jefferson said.
“So being able to process information quickly would be just getting it in and out of his hands as fast as possible so he doesn’t feel the effect of the rush.”
Vikings Aren’t Ruling Out J.J. McCarthy Just Yet
A November 26 report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed that McCarthy is unlikely to play after entering the protocol, but Minnesota isn’t willing to officially rule out the player.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said McCarthy was a limited participant in practice on November 26, focusing on individual drills, while Brosmer will take the first-team reps.
“[McCarthy has] cleared enough of the protocol to at least participate in a limited capacity today. That’s kind of part of the next step of it,” O’Connell said in his press conference (h/t Pro Football Talk). “[T]his is not talking about a hand or an ankle or anything like that — we’re talking about his head.
“And it’s obviously something as a former player and just kind of thinking about it in that context, we want to make sure we defer to the medical team. But then, also, what we feel is best. And we’re still not in a place to declare anything yet. Just kind of listening to where it’s at right now and where it could get to.
“But we’re obviously going to be smart, both for what’s best for our team and what’s best, most importantly, for J.J. … And as the week goes on, we’ll be able to update you guys on what he’s able to do.”
Vikings Are Confident in Max Brosmer
Despite almost no experience under center, O’Connell noted that he and the team are confident that Brosmer can get the job done for the Vikings.
“[H] e’s done nothing but just attack it every day and continue to understand that the reps with Carson [Wentz] or J.J. at different points in the season are going to be pretty hard to come by,” O’Connell said (h/t Pro Football Talk).
“So, he maximizes the practice squad reps — the look-team reps, I should say. So, he’s done everything to be ready when his number’s been called, and he’ll be ready if that’s what takes place on Sunday. And I’ll have a lot of confidence in him if that’s what happens.”
