SAN MATEO — A retail heist on Thanksgiving eve ended in one of the suspects spending the holiday in jail after he and three others allegedly stole thousands of dollars in clothing from the Hillsdale Shopping Center.
According to the San Mateo police, the suspects – one 19-year-old and three juveniles who live in Oakland – stole about $6,000 worth of Lululemon clothing from the mall at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
They then drove off with the stolen goods, but police tracked their vehicle to Oakland where all four suspects were detained and the stolen merchandise was found in their vehicle.
The 19-year-old, identified as Charles Gaines II, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, organized retail theft with the intent to sell the stolen goods, conspiracy to commit a crime and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said. He was later booked into San Mateo County jail.
The three juveniles, aged 14, 16, and 17, were released to their parents and guardians, but authorities are seeking to charge them in juvenile court with second-degree burglary, organized retail theft with the intent to sell the stolen merchandise and conspiracy to commit a crime.
According to police, two of the juveniles were also identified as suspects in a prior Lululemon theft that involved a reported loss of $13,000.
