Commanders WR says Dolphins “could’ve won” Super Bowl

Washington Commanders wide receiver Robbie Chosen spoke with former left tackle Terron Armstead, and was asked which team was the best he’s ever been a part of. The former Dolphins player responded with the 2023 Dolphins, saying “We had that stick… we could’ve won a Super Bowl.”

Armstead, who hosted the podcast with Chosen, was also a member of the 2023 Dolphins added “We was stacked, had everything we needed.” The former Dolphins left tackle cited injuries for the Dolphins season being derailed.

2023 Miami Dolphins

The 2023 Miami Dolphins were one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. They broke their franchise record by scoring 70 points in a game and became the first team since 1966 to reach that mark. The Dolphins had a chance of breaking the single game record of 72 points, but head coach Mike McDaniel opted not to kick a field goal that would’ve given them the record, citing karma

The Dolphins started the season 11-4, before dropping their final two regular season games and losing the division title on Sunday Night Football against the Bills. That same Dolphins team had a chance of securing the number one seed in the AFC, but they lost 56-19 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Miami’s roster featured six Pro Bowl selections, headlined by first-team All-Pro Tyreek Hill who led the NFL in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Running back Raheem Mostert also led the league in rushing touchdowns while quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led in passing yards.

The injury factor Armstead mentioned was real for this roster. Starters Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Connor Williams, Isaiah Wynn, Andrew Van Ginkel and Xavien Howard all finished the year on Injured Reserve. Their star wide receiver tandem of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill both missed time late in the year and were far from 100% by the playoffs.

Ultimately, the Dolphins season ended in Kansas City as they played in the fourth coldest game in NFL history. To make up for the injuries, the Dolphins had to sign veteran free agent edge rushers the week prior to their playoff clash. The eventual Super Bowl champions beat Miami 26-7 in a game where the previously explosive Dolphins offense failed to create any fireworks.

What Followed for Miami

After the Miami Dolphins extended the longest streak in the NFL of not winning a playoff game, substantial changes happened to the team. Robert Hunt, Andrew Van Ginkel and Christian Wilkins all left the team in free agency. Bradley Chubb missed the 2024 season as he was still recovering from his late season injury.

Players on rookie salaries like Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle signed extensions, while veterans like Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey restructured their deals.

By losing out on significant contributors and paying others, the Dolphins had to go bargain shopping in free agency as they lacked draft picks to replenish the roster. Former general manager Chris Grier brought in free agents Jordyn Brooks, Aaron Brewer, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith. Unfortunately, despite having success with these moves, the talent loss, alongside a concussion for Tua Tagovailoa derailed the Dolphins 2024 season.
