Elizabeth Olsen Makes Rare, Heartfelt Comments About Sisters Mary-Kate & Ashley

Elizabeth Olsen Says Sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Have Always Supported Her

In a rare glimpse into her family life, Elizabeth Olsen is reflecting on the steady support she has always received from her older sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. In a new profile with The Times of London, the actress looked back on growing up with the twins and the bond that has only deepened as they’ve gotten older.

“[My sisters] were forced to watch all my plays my whole life and go to my dance performances,” Elizabeth, 36, joked. “We’re just a supportive family.”

She said that even with Mary-Kate and Ashley’s early success, the twins never gave her acting notes. “It feels irrelevant to talk about [acting] after 15 years of working,” she said, adding that her childhood often felt “pretty chaotic.”

Elizabeth reflected on what it meant to grow up in a very full household at the end. “I was the youngest of four,” she said. “We were all born within five years.”

Her parents, Jarnette and David Olsen, share son James Trent, twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, and Elizabeth. David later welcomed two more children with his second wife, McKenzie Olsen.

As she followed her sisters into entertainment, Elizabeth often credited her upbringing for shaping her confidence.

“People should feel more strong as women now more than ever,” she told reporters in 2017. “I always felt like a very empowered young female and it’s something that my sisters and I try to figure out.”

She Says Having Twin Sisters Offered a Unique Advantage

Elizabeth has long said that growing up with older twin sisters shaped the way she learned to move through the world. “I always felt that having older twin sisters was an advantage,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2022.

“I felt very clear about how I was going to navigate lots of things because of watching them. I also felt very protected. There’s something that I’ll never experience [in their twin] connection, but I feel lucky to be witness to it.”

Mary-Kate and Ashley have become known for guarding their privacy, a choice Elizabeth fully respects as she continues to build her own career.

Elizabeth’s career continues to grow, even as she remains unsure when she will next return as Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel universe.

“The fans are so loyal and it’s nice to play the same character for ten years, but with Marvel you never know the next time you will be used in a film,” she told The Times.

“You have to live your life and make decisions to be in things that are important to you in the meantime.”

She recently moved into a very different space, taking on the role of Joan in A24’s “Eternity,” an afterlife romantic comedy where her character must choose between two deceased husbands.

“[The movie] reminded me of the musicals that my mom showed me when I was growing up,” she said. “She showed me every single classic — Guys and Dolls, Carousel, Oklahoma! I loved them and I took every single performance class I could because I was so in love with musicals.”
