The Minnesota Vikings‘ quarterback play has been a disaster this 2025 NFL season. After betting on J.J. McCarthy to become the No. 1 guy under center, Minnesota could push for a veteran quarterback this offseason to challenge the young signal-caller for the starting job.
Since returning from injury, McCarthy has struggled and suffered a concussion during the loss to the Green Bay Packers. Minnesota cannot run it back next season with McCarthy and Max Brosmer as its options.
As a result, ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky is urging the Vikings to pursue two names to improve the position and keep star wideout Justin Jefferson happy.
“The likeliest way that I think [the Vikings] can keep [Jefferson], at least, or make him happy is Daniel Jones or Mac Jones,” Orlovsky said on the December 1 edition of “Get Up.” “That’s really the future in Minnesota. I think they’re going to have to bring some high-end competition in for J.J. McCarthy.
“The free-agent market is not going to be great. Daniel Jones will be a free agent. Mac Jones, I believe, is under contract for San Francisco, but could he be a trade target? The draft is not going to be great, and you’re not drafting a kid to bring in with J.J. McCarthy because then there’s two unproven young players. In relation to Justin, does Mac Jones get you happy? Does Daniel Jones get you happy?”
Vikings’ Latest Issues With QB Play
With McCarthy out due to a concussion, the Vikings relied on Brosmer, but their offense still struggled under the backup quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks on November 30.
The defeat was the fifth in six games where the team couldn’t score 20 points, and the second straight game failing to reach 10. Brosmer’s first NFL start was a tough one: He finished 19 of 30 for 126 yards and threw four interceptions.
After the loss, Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media about the 24-year-old’s performance.
“This is great experience for him,” O’Connell said postgame about Brosmer’s start. “It won’t get harder than going to Seattle for your first start against that defense. He’s such a competitor and obviously wants to come out here and lead this team to a win.
“I told him that’s a great experience and an unbelievable learning opportunity—knowing what it felt like, seeing it firsthand, and maybe, as he gains more experience—which Max is going to have plenty of in this league—the game will slow down a little, even though we believe he is already a fast processor.”
Vikings Need to Address QB Problems
After Minnesota’s loss to Seattle, CBS Sports NFL analyst Bryant McFadden commented on the Vikings’ ongoing offensive issues over the past few weeks. He added that, for the first time under O’Connell, the team is showing an evident weakness at the most critical position in football.
“When you look at what Kevin O’Connell has been able to do regardless of who’s been at the quarterback position, worst case scenario, we’ve seen serviceable play, “McFadden said on the November 30 edition of “CBS Sports HQ. “
“With J.J. McCarthy, clearly the expectations were not there when he has been in the lineup. And now, when you talk about having Max Brosmer in this situation, a rookie free agent making his first start on the road in Seattle, against this defensive unit.
“We knew it was going to be ugly, but we didn’t think it would get this ugly. Sacked four times, four interceptions. They scored a defensive touchdown. I mean, this is who the Seattle Seahawks is if you don’t have your game right offensively. They can embarrass you. They’re the wrong bully to attack when you’re not a bully.”
