Many fans of the New York Yankees did not know the name Cam Schlittler before the 2025 MLB season, but they sure know him now.
So with the Yankees starting rotation riddled by injuries, Carlos Lagrange is a name to know this offseason, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
Hoch compared Lagrange, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, to Schlittler in a recent story, calling the 6-7 Dominican-born pitcher a prospect for Yankees fans to discover.
Lagrange is just 22, and like Schlittler — who is 6-5 — he uses his massive frame to dial up a triple-digits fastball. He spent the bulk of 2025 pitching for Double-A Somerset, making 15 starts for the Patriots.
Carlos Lagrange Is A Cam Schlittler Comp, According to Yankees Writer
You could be forgiven if Lagrange’s name is outside your purview, since the 22-year-old only jumped to the top of the team’s prospect list this season.
“Carlos Lagrange jumped in the prospect rankings this past season on the strength of a campaign in which he was 11-8 with a 3.53 ERA in 24 Minor League games (23 starts), striking out 168 batters in 120 innings,” Hoch said.
Lagrange is ranked as the No. 74 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline and only entered the top-100 in September. He trails only shortstop George Lombard Jr., who also spent 2025 in Somerset, on New York’s prospect list and even sits ahead of power-hitting outfielder Spencer Jones.
Not bad for a low-cost signing from the DR, especially if he can follow in Schlittler’s footsteps and produce an impact in the Bronx this season.
“A $10,000 find out of the Dominican Republic, the 6-foot-7 22-year-old right-hander hits triple-digits with his fastball and has improved his control,” Hoch wrote. “He could follow a trajectory similar to Cam Schlittler, whose strong second half included a dominant outing to eliminate the Red Sox from the American League Wild Card Series.”
The Yankees May End Up Relying On Carlos Lagrange In 2026
The Yankees are tied to seemingly every free agent and high-profile trade. They have been linked to Tarik Skubal and Sandy Alcantara and even National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes.
But long-time general manager Brian Cashman’s actual business rarely leaks. Many of those rumors stem from agents and pontificators who associate the Yankees’ deep pockets and historically aggressive dealings.
So when Hoch reported the Yankees are focused on remaking their bullpen — even while Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt are slated to start the year on the injured list — it certainly raised eyebrows.
“Though Cashman mentioned free-agent starter Michael King among the early calls heâs made, the primary focus appears to be in the bullpen,” Hoch wrote. “That group was uneven this past season, and free agency has already pulled Devin Williams and Luke Weaver to the open market.”
A cursory look shows the Yankees with just four healthy starters — Max Fried, Schlittler, Luis Gil and Will Warren — ahead of spring training. Sure, Cole, Rodon and Schmidt are all expected to return healthy for the second half of 2026, but each was healthy this time last year.
So it’s plausible Lagrange will enter the season with the chance to win a starting-rotation role — even if the Yankees sign King or prized Japanese prospect Tatsuya Imai or make a deal.
