Kay found success in the Nippon Professional Baseball league, sporting a 2.53 ERA over two seasons.
The Sox are taking a bet that Kay’s pedigree as a former first-round pick — and his success overseas — portends success in his second stint in the majors. Kay was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2016 amateur draft out of the University of Connecticut.
