Pamela Anderson is a famously recognizable name. However, if it were up to the star, she would be known by a different moniker.
“Before the world knew Pamela Anderson, there was Pamela Hyytiäinen â a child raised on myth and magic,” according to Vogue Scandinavia. “Her Finnish grandfather, Herman Hyytiäinen, was a logger and a poet who believed in folklore, fairies, and trees that whispered secrets to each other. Between grandfather and granddaughter, a whole imaginative universe bloomed.”
âHe was the closest person to me in my life,â the star said.
“Hyytiäinen was her grandfatherâs surname before it was changed to Anderson when the family arrived in Canada, tucking her roots behind a slightly more North American gloss,” per Vogue Scandinavia. “Still, the Nordic spirit endured.”
That’s why Anderson revealed, âSometimes I don’t want to be Pamela Anderson. I want to be Pamela Hyytiäinen. I would like to change my name, but they wonât let me.â
Pamela Used to Speak Finnish with Her Grandfather
GettyNot only did Anderson’s family have a different last name, but her grandfather also taught her a different language.
“Herman taught her Finnish â or what she thought at the time to be a magical language that no one else could understand,” Vogue Scandinavia noted. “As a child, she carried a small white Finnish dictionary everywhere under her arm, learning new words to impress him. The language and connection was theirs alone.”
âIt kind of left with him,â Anderson explained while noting that her grandfather passed away when she was around 11 years old.
Pamela Isn’t the Only Star to Change Their Last Name
GettyIf Anderson were to change her last name, she would be far from the only Hollywood figure to do so.
Kat Dennings’ real last name is Litwack, according to People.
Dove Cameron is really Chloe Celeste Hoffman.
Vin Diesel wanted a tougher name than his own, Mark Sinclair.
Olivia Wilde was previously known as Olivia Jane Cockburn.
Meg Ryan was born as Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra.
If you met Nicki Minaj when she was younger, she might have introduced herself as Onika Tanya Maraj.
DJ (and Taylor Swift’s ex) Calvin Harris is actually Adam Richard Wiles.
Jon Bon Jovi’s name was originally John Francis Bongiovi Jr.
John Legend was John Roger Stephens.
The late Kirk Douglas was given the name Issur Danielovitch when he was born.
And the late Audrey Hepburn was born as Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston.
