Winslet on Directing Joeâs Story: ‘I Suddenly Couldn’t Let It Go‘
During a recent appearance on âJimmy Kimmel Live,â Winslet shared what it meant to guide her sonâs screenplay from the page to the screen. She explained that she originally planned only to act in and produce the film.
âWhen it came to the point of the screenplay being ready, I was going to produce it. I was going to play the character of Julia, and I knew that we were in a position to find a director. And I suddenly couldn’t let it go,â she said.
âAnd I said to him, look, I would love to direct it because when you give it to a director, it becomes theirs, which is exactly the right thing that should happen. But I didn’t want that for him.â
Winslet said she wanted Joe to stay close to the process.
GettyâI wanted him to remain a part of it. I wanted him to experience seeing this beautiful thing that he had created come to life,â she added. âAnd he happens to be very, very smart about film, and having him there with me every day was just fantastic.â
A Creative Partnership Built on Trust and Playfulness
Winslet described the process of developing the script together as joyful and collaborative. âWe would read it through together and figure out what should stay and what should go and what was funny and what wasn’t funny enough,â she said. âAnd that process was glorious.â
She also revealed what she learned about navigating disagreements with her son on set. âI had to learn how to say things to him in a sensitive way if I thought maybe something could work differently or whatever,â she said.
âAnd he would also disagree with me and he would say, âWell, I didn’t you know I don’t know if I saw it like that.â And I’d say, âJust hang on, hang on, hang on.ââ
Despite the give-and-take, Winslet emphasized that they never clashed and kept their shared goal in focus.
Winsletâs Family Life Remains Her Center
GettyWinslet is also mother to daughter Mia, 25, and son Bear, 11. She shares Mia with her ex-husband, Jim Threapleton; Joe with director Sam Mendes; and Bear with her husband, Edward Abel Smith.
She has often spoken about prioritizing a grounded home life. In a 2017 Harperâs Bazaar interview, Winslet said she prefers to remain hands-on.
âI don’t have a chef or a driver or things like that,â she said. âI would be so unhappy if I had those things, and I wouldn’t feel like I was being a real person anymore.â
She said her children appreciate that sense of normalcy. âI want them to look back and remember my chicken soup and my packed lunches and that it was me on the school run.â
Now, with âGoodbye June,â Winslet and Joe move forward into a meaningful new chapter together.
