What was shaping up to be a promising 2025 season for the Atlanta Falcons has unraveled quickly. After a 3-2 start, the Falcons have now lost six of their last seven games, including a 27-24 defeat to the New York Jets in Week 13, dropping them to 4-8.
The loss to New York followed a familiar pattern: critical mistakes, missed opportunities, and another blown fourth-quarter lead. Atlanta has now lost four straight games by a combined 13 points, with two of those coming in overtime. Once again, the Falcons found themselves unable to finish late.
Naturally, the pressure falls on head coach Raheem Morris, now in his second season leading the team. Morris holds a 12-17 record with the Falcons, 16-24 when including his interim run in 2020, and 33-55 overall counting his three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Believe it or not, the Falcons aren’t technically eliminated from playoff contention, but they would need an improbable surge over the final five games—and plenty of outside help. So the real question becomes: what does Morris need to do to keep his job?
Raheem Morris Likely Gets One More Season With Falcons
Morris is still only in his second season in Atlanta, though he wasn’t the most popular hire at the time. Fans continue to point out that the Falcons interviewed Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh and Ben Johnson before ultimately choosing Morris—something social media hasn’t forgotten.
But according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the situation may not be as precarious as it appears.
“Would Falcons owner Arthur Blank be compelled to make a change after two disappointing seasons? What I have been told is that Blank respects Morris a lot, so I don’t expect a rash decision one way or the other,” Fowler wrote.
Blank has become a lightning rod for criticism among Falcons fans, with calls for him to step down becoming more common. During his long ownership tenure, he has shown patience with his head coaches—perhaps too much, in the eyes of many fans.
“Any sort of in-season move would be a mild surprise from my view,” Fowler added. “While there’s at least some smoke around this job, this feels far from finalized. And Atlanta has enough talent to turn things around over the final five weeks. If Morris gets a third year, I would expect more staff or coordinator changes. Special teams have been a liability, and the offense has regressed despite playmakers on that side of the ball.”
Falcons Face Challenging Finish to the Season
If Morris wants to secure his future, the final stretch offers both opportunity and risk. What “salvaging” the season looks like is up for debate. Winning out would be miraculous and could potentially push Atlanta to the edge of a playoff spot—but expecting five straight wins is unrealistic.
The Falcons’ remaining opponents have a combined record of 30-30. Only Arizona and New Orleans have losing records, while the other games include a road trip to Tampa Bay—who beat Atlanta in Week 1—and home matchups with the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.
Is an 8-9 finish enough to keep Morris secure? Or will an extended losing streak seal his fate? At this point, only a five-game collapse seems certain to end his tenure. Everything else remains wide open.
