200 homes evacuated after two men arrested for ‘explosive offences’ in Derby

Families have been told to expect ‘a bang’ after police began evacuating 200 families from homes in Derby.

An evacuation zone across seven residential streets has been put in place for 24 hours as families scramble to collect pets and medicine.

The order was made after officers carried out a warrant acting on intelligence about potentially explosive materials at a home in Vulcan Street.

Two men, one in his 40s and another in his 50s, have been arrested on suspicion of explosives offences.

They remain in police custody.

Derbyshire Police say the incident is not currently being treated as terrorism and there is no wider risk to the community.

A spokesman said: ‘Residents in the area of Vulcan Street may hear a bang shortly – this is controlled and is part of the work being carried out by the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Division who are supporting this incident.’

The force say the ‘evacuations are a precaution to ensure the safety of those’ in the area.

A spokesperson said: ‘Anyone who lives within the affected area is asked to prepare to be out of their homes for 24 hours and make preparations should they need medicines or require pets.’

The initial rest centre for those affected will be located at the Salvation Army in Omaston Road.
