Bo Bichette Gets Strong Message Amid Uncertain Blue Jays Future

Bo Bichette remains a free agent, and there’s no certainty that he returns to the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite being a homegrown product, there’s a chance Bichette could continue his career elsewhere.

Moreover, former MLB player Yonder Alonso believes Bichette might have to give up playing shortstop and move to a different position in the infield for the next team that employs him, whether that’s Toronto or another big league team.

“I like [Bichette] at third,” Alonso said during a December 4 appearance on MLB Network. “I think with the knee problems he had this year, he can take some load off of it, go to the corner, and he’ll embrace it. He’ll be better. Defensively, he’ll be better as well.”

Even when presented with the fact that Bichette has never played third base in his professional career, Alonso didn’t waver from his opinion.

“I think a middle infielder is always a lot easier to move over to third than it is an outfielder moving him to third or maybe a corner guy or a second baseman,” Alonso added. “You’re still on that same side, and that’s why I like my third because you’re on the same left side of the infield. So it won’t be as frustrating. You have some time to work it out.”

Bo Bichette Gets 3B Comparable

Furthermore, Alonso believes there’s a comparable situation if a team moves Bichette to third base. The MLB analyst states that the free-agent hitter can replicate what Alex Bregman has done at third base for the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.

“With his glove and his arm, third base will be ideal for him,” Alonso added. “He’ll be a version of Alex Bregman. When he moved from shortstop out of LSU, and then he went to third base, it worked perfect, right? I like him at third. He’s built for third. He’s only going to get better at third.

“Offensively he’ll be even better playing third base than it is second base or shortstop. There’s so much wear and tear in the middle of the infield; every single day there’s wear and tear. I’m not saying third base is an easier position or more demanding position. It’s still a hard position.”

Blue Jays Insider Offers Update on Bo Bichette

With Alonso floating the idea of a position change, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi made a December 1 appearance on MLB Network to pass along what he’s been hearing about where things stand with Bichette and whether the Blue Jays are still a viable option.

“I do think there continues to be mutual interest on both sides,” Davidi said. “I’ve felt all along that both the Blue Jays and Bo Bichette have needed the market to help them frame the value, and that part of it is taking shape. You hear that a lot of teams are getting involved, and in some ways, you hear people say the market for him is still fully developing.”

With their pitching depth bolstered for the 2026 MLB season after the signings of Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, the next question for the Blue Jays will be the lineup, including whether that includes re-signing Bichette.
