The World Cup countdown has begun and the anticipation is building for what will be the largest tournament in its 96-year history.
For the first time, 48 nations will do battle for the prize, an expansion from 32 teams, a decision which has drawn some criticism amongst fans.
But today, there is a palpable feeling of excitement – and a few nerves – in Washington DC, with the eyes of the world focused on the Kennedy Center for the group-stage draw.
Hosts USA, Mexico and Canada are guaranteed spots in Pot 1, alongside reigning champions Argentina, bookies’ favourites Spain and Thomas Tuchel’s England, among others.
The opening World Cup contest will kick off on June 11 2026. New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium will bring the curtain down on 39 days of action on July 19.
