News Anchor Calls It Quits & Moves On After 21 Years

Longtime CBS News anchor Maurice DuBois is closing out a major chapter in his career. DuBois revealed he is leaving the network after 21 years, marking Dec. 18 as the date of his final broadcast. The announcement came in an Instagram post where he shared a carousel of moments from his time at CBS and reflected on the privilege of delivering the news to viewers across the country.

“Moving On: December 18th is the day of my last broadcast at CBS News,” he wrote. “It has been the Honor of a Lifetime. 21 years altogether, including my time at WCBS-TV in New York City. What a privilege! To be welcomed into your homes night after night, delivering the news / meeting extraordinary people and telling their stories. I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories.”

DuBois stepped into the “CBS Evening News” anchor role with John Dickerson earlier this year following Norah O’Donnell’s departure. His exit comes at a time of notable transitions across the network, which, according to People, includes Dickerson’s own forthcoming departure and structural shifts within the CBS News division.

CBS has not yet announced who will succeed DuBois at the anchor desk.

Colleagues Praise DuBois’ Legacy

Shortly after DuBois shared the news, tributes flooded his comments section from colleagues who have worked alongside him both in the studio and in the field.

CBS News correspondent Vladimir Duthiers honored DuBois’ impact, writing, “A legend, a towering presence in the newsroom, a mentor and an exemplar. Thank you for blazing a trail, @mauriceduboistv.”

CBS New York anchor Alice Gainer also reflected on her experience working with him, commenting, “An honor and a pleasure to work with you. Wishing you nothing but continued success. Can’t wait to see what’s next.”

CBS News anchor Errol Barnett added his praise, saying, “You have lead powerful broadcasts and will continue to be my standard bearer. Thank you for everything.”

Other commenters echoed similar sentiments, applauding DuBois’ integrity and professionalism throughout his decades-long career.

During his 21 years with the network, DuBois anchored “CBS Mornings,” “48 Hours,” “60 Minutes Sports” and “CBS Sunday Morning,” in addition to his longstanding role with WCBS in New York. His earlier journalism career included roles at “Today,” “Dateline” and MSNBC.

A Major Shift for CBS Evening News Begins

DuBois’ exit signals another major shift for “CBS Evening News,” which has seen significant restructuring throughout 2024 and 2025. According to People, Dickerson announced in October that he will also leave the network at the end of the year, leaving both anchor chairs open.

The departures come as CBS News undergoes broader leadership changes following Paramount’s acquisition by Skydance and the recent appointment of Bari Weiss as the division’s editor in chief.

Despite the transitions, DuBois’ announcement centered on gratitude. The veteran journalist emphasized how meaningful it has been to inform viewers for more than two decades, ending his post with a message that resonated widely across the newsroom and beyond.

“Until then,” he wrote, “see you on ‘The CBS Evening New’s every night at 6:30.”
