Brigitte Bardot, 91, Says a “Miracle” Saved Her Life

Brigitte Bardot is revisiting some of the most challenging moments of her life in Bardot, a new documentary chronicling her rise to worldwide fame. The 91-year-old actress revealed she tried to take her life several times during the height of her career.

“I was taking my own life,” Bardot said in the film, according to The Sunday Times. “And I was saved by a miracle.”

She did not clarify what the miracle was, but acknowledged that she still battles depression. “Every morning I wake up, and I am sad,” she shared.

Bardot first detailed her suicide attempts and struggles with alcohol in her 1998 autobiography. She told The Guardian that the pressures of fame pushed her toward destructive habits. She revealed she once drank “two bottles of champagne and three bottles of wine a day” before retiring from acting in 1973.

“When you live such intense moments as I have done there is always a bill to pay,” she said at the time. “You cannot escape the distress which follows great happiness.”

Bardot became one of the most recognizable stars of the 1950s and 1960s, earning worldwide fame through roles in Roger Vadim’s “And God Created Woman” and Jean-Luc Godard’s “Le Mépris.”

Her image helped define an era of fashion, beauty, and celebrity before she eventually stepped away from Hollywood to focus on activism.

In the years that followed, Bardot became known for her outspoken commitment to animal rights and, at times, for public statements that sparked controversy.

The documentary comes only months after the French newspaper Var-matin reported that Bardot had undergone surgery “as part of a serious illness” and spent three weeks in the hospital. The nature of the illness was never revealed.

Not long after, rumors began spreading online that Bardot had died. She quickly put the speculation to rest. “I am doing well and I have no plan on taking my bow,” she wrote in a translated post on X.

Her new documentary marks her most intimate public reflection yet, pulling back the curtain on a life often defined by glamour but shaped just as deeply by private battles.

It offers a rare, vulnerable look at the emotional cost of fame, the years she spent fighting despair, and the “miracle” she believes kept her alive.
