The Philadelphia Eagles got some clarity on the state of their upcoming opponent on Friday evening. Philly is set to take on the Chargers on Monday Night Football, and the status of Los Angeles’ star quarterback, Justin Herbert, hangs over the game. Herbert injured his hand during a game against the Raiders last week, though he managed to finish out the game after a brief absence.
After the game, it was revealed that Herbert had broken his left (non-throwing) hand. He underwent surgery on Monday, with the goal of suiting up against the Eagles, but without any certainty on if that could happen.
Herbert’s availability for this game is critical for the Chargers in a spot where both teams really need a win. For the Eagles, they want to avoid falling into the NFC’s brutal wildcard picture, and with the Cowboys losing on Thursday night against the Lions, Philadelphia has an opportunity to create some separation in the NFC East — if they can get the win on Monday night.

“Yeah, talking to people around the building, everybody has high hopes for Justin Herbert to play on Monday,” said NFL Network’s Omar Ruiz on The Insiders on Friday night. “[The Chargers have] seen him over the years — how tough he’s been battling through several other injuries throughout the course of his career. And then just seeing him on Sunday come back into that Raiders game after hurting his hand, and playing as effectively as he did. All signs why there is that optimism that he plays on Monday.”
“He’s been limited in practice the last couple of days, running seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 today, but [Chargers head coach] Jim Harbaugh said he did not take any snaps from under center,” Ruiz continued. “So you have to surmise he did nothing but shotgun and pistol formations, just like he did on Sunday when he came back against the Raiders.”
“Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said how that might affect the offense is really minimal. He said they could pretty much run what they want to do from the run game, obviously from the pass game in those formations. He says the only difference is obviously, when you’re in a pistol formation, you can’t run in the I-formation. And he said they had a little hiccup down toward the goal line running that type of offense, on a mix-up between shotgun and pistol, should’ve been one or the other. So little things like that are things they can adjust to if Justin Herbert is able to play, and if they have to do nothing but shotgun or pistol on Monday night.”
The Philadelphia Eagles are in the Home Stretch
After this game against the Chargers, the Eagles close the regular season against the Raiders, Commanders, Bills, and the Commanders again. Other than the game in Buffalo, Philadelphia should be favored in all those games.
Winning against the Chargers become paramount, because if they do, the Eagles have a real shot at finishing 12-5. That would guarantee them the division and it might put them in position to compete for the NFC’s No. 1 seed, as well.
