Critical Bears Defender Injured During Warmups Ahead of Packers Game

The Chicago Bears secondary are without one of its top performers against the Green Bay Packers in Week 14.

Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reported the news just before kickoff in a game at Lambeau Field on Sunday, December 7 that will determine the NFC North Division leader with one month remaining in the NFL season.

“Bears CB Kyler Gordon suffered a groin injury in pre-game warmups and is out,” Fishbain reported via X.

Gordon, 25, has been snakebitten by injuries all season, playing in just three contests all year and starting just one game. He entered the season as one of the top slot cornerbacks in the league.

It is unclear precisely how Gordon suffered the injury, though it is worth noting that the temperature was just 16 degrees at kickoff and felt like 5 degrees with the wind chill.

Kyler Gordon Has Suffered 4 Injuries During 2025 Campaign

Gordon battled a hamstring injury during the preseason, which lingered and ultimately led the Bears to place him on the injured reserve list (IR) for the first four games of the season.

He returned for two games against the Washington Commanders and New Orleans Saints, but went back to the sideline for several weeks due to a calf injury and a groin injury, which the cornerback sustained during practice.

Gordon came back to practice on November 19 and played in Chicago’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles the day following Thanksgiving. It is unclear whether Gordon re-aggravated the same groin injury on Sunday that plagued him in recent weeks, or if the issue he sustained constitutes a new injury.

Gordon has tallied 17 pass breakups, 10 tackles for loss, five interceptions, five fumble recoveries, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 45 games played (35 starts) over the course of his four-year NFL career.

Fortunately for the Bears, Jaylon Johnson also returned for last week’s game against the Eagles after multiple groin injuries limited him to just one appearance all season prior to the contest in Philly (Week 2 against the Detroit Lions).

“Johnson has been limited to one game this season due to two different groin injuries, the second of which required surgery,” Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com wrote November 27. “He returned to practice Nov. 14, opening a 21-day window to activate him off IR.”

The Bears picked up cornerback CJ Gardner-Johnson after the Houston Texans released him early in the season. Gardner-Johnson started at the nickel back position in Gordon’s stead on Sunday and registered a first-quarter interception of Packers quarterback Jordan Love. However, the turnover did not lead to any points for Chicago.

The Bears entered the week as the No. 1 team in the NFC with a 9-3 record. Green Bay trailed Chicago by a half-game coming into Week 14 and was a touchdown-favorite to win the contest at kickoff.

Chicago will host the Packers at Soldier Field for the teams’ second matchup of the season just 13 days from now.
