Browns’ Myles Garrett Gives Honest View of Shedeur Sanders Breakout Game

With 29 points scored on Sunday, the Browns offense was in something of an odd position this week against the Titans. Sure, they lost, and there’s nothing new there. But the Browns really can’t pin this one on the way the offense played. There were special teams mistakes, and that is something we’re plenty used to. However, if any unit in this game provided a letdown, it was the defense.

They gave up 31 points and, worse, allowed themselves to get hammered by a Tennessee running game that was No. 31 in the league in yardage coming in and had topped 100 yards only twice this season. But the Titans gained 184 on the ground against the Browns, after having gained 189 rushing yards in their last three games combined.

What made that fact worse is that the Browns got the best start of Shedeur Sanders‘ young career, and easily the best start of any Cleveland quarterback this season. But in a surprise role-reversal, between the poor run defense and coach Kevin Stefanski’s bizarre decision to attempt two-point conversions on Cleveland’s final two touchdowns, the rest of the team let down the Browns’ quarterback on this day.

Shedeur Sanders ‘Came Up Big’

Browns star defender Myles Garrett, who has spoken so often of being frustrated by putting up big defensive numbers in losses this year, on Sunday praised Sanders’ continued development. Sanders was 23-for-42 passing on the day, for 364 yards and three touchdown. He had an interception took two sacks.

“I think he did well. I think he looked good—I mean, he came up big when we needed him to,” Garrett said. “There’s gonna be some ups and downs for anyone, especially a rookie. But he went in there and he was composed, he got out of some sacks, he broke the pocket, he made some big-time plays. Just looking for him to continue to grow, looking for that clock to speed up a little bit.

“He is a little more at ease each week.”

Browns’ Myles Garrett Records Sack No. 20

Garrett did get another sack for the Browns this week, running his total to 20 on the season. With four games to play, he appears to be a shoo-in to break the all-time NFL sack record, which is 22.5. Garrett was frustrated, though, that the Browns did not force the Titans to throw the ball more and offer more sack chances.

Titans rookie Cam Ward was 14-for-28 passing and was sacked only the one time by the Browns.

Garrett was asked what his 20th sack means to him.

“It means I am blessed to, and I am privileged to be on the field. Blessed to be with the teammates and the coaches that I have,” Garrett said.

“I couldn’t do it without all of their help. It takes four to rush, we always talk about four makes one. Those guys, whether it is containing, or pushing to me, or vice versa, we have been rushing really well as a unit. And I think we were licking our chops for the pass, and they stuck with the run. We should have been focused on stopping the run to earn that right. We didn’t earn that right today.”
