Yankees Trade Idea Offloads Jasson Dominguez in Exchange for Marlins’ 3.53 ERA Starter

The New York Yankees are expected to be active this offseason. While they haven’t really done much up until this point, MLB’s Winter Meetings are just getting underway, and some of the league’s biggest moves are expected to take place this week.

Last year, the Yankees signed Max Fried around this time of year, so big moves could be imminent. It’s just a matter of whether or not New York will sign a key free agent or look towards the trade market to make a splash. A recent ESPN article has the Yankees acquiring a starter from the Miami Marlins, but offloading Jasson Dominguez.

Yankees Trade Idea Lands Marlins’ Edward Cabrera

The Yankees are thought to need a starting pitcher this offseason. Not a true ace, but someone who can give quality innings for the beginning part of the season until Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are fully healthy.

A recent ESPN article that proposes a wild trade idea ahead of the Winter Meetings recently mocked the Yankees trading for Marlins’ starter Edward Cabrera, and giving up Jasson Dominguez in the process.

The proposed trade also had the Yankees giving up a top prospect, which is fitting considering that Edward Cabrera has a lot more service time under his belt, but the time might be now for New York to move off Jasson Dominguez.

Edward Cabrera finished 2025 with a 3.53 ERA over 26 starts and 137.2 innings. Over his five-year career, he has a 4.03 ERA in 431.2 innings.

The Yankees need to keep pace with the other AL East teams that are making moves. The Red Sox have already traded for two starting pitchers, and Toronto signed the top starter in this year’s free agent class in Dylan Cease.

Should the Yankees Offload Jasson Dominguez?

This is the big question about this trade idea. If the Yankees are unable to retain outfielder Cody Bellinger, then there is an immediate need for an outfielder, which Jasson Dominguez could fill.

In all likelihood, Dominguez may stay put this offseason, but 2026 is a strong “prove-it” season for the “Martian”. In 149 career games, Dominguez has 16 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a .327 on-base percentage.

However, it will be interesting to see what kind of buzz he picks up over the next few weeks. Another realm of possibility is that the Yankees go out and sign several outfield free agents, and then use Dominguez as trade bait to acquire another depth starter.

The reports indicate that the Yankees are potentially worried about their payroll, but considering the worth of the franchise, that is subject to change in the blink of an eye.
