On Sunday, December 14, Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions have a high stakes game against the Los Angeles Rams, and the outcome of the game will help determine if the Lions get to the postseason. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and it’s ironic that the Lions will be playing their former quarterback, Matthew Stafford, who’s having a strong year with the Rams.
According to research from Los Angeles Rams, Stafford has notched more than 3,300 yards, 30 touchdown and few interceptions, with a high completion percentage in the mid-60% range. He also has an elite passer rating of more than 100. So, the Detroit Lions are going to need their best players on the field to contain him on Sunday.
Ahead of the game, the Lions are dealing with injuries, as are many teams in the NFL at this point in the season, and they’re shuffling around players. On Tuesday, December 9, the team announced the signing of a player to their active roster, so he’ll be good to go on Sunday.
Detroit Lions Move Player Up to Active Roster
On Tuesday, December 9, the Detroit Lions announced that they’re signing cornerback Arthur Maulet to their active roster. The team needs cornerback help, and this move will hopefully help the defense as they take on the Rams’ elite offense.
The Lions signed Maulet to their practice squad back in early October, and when the team’s cornerback roster got injured, he got significant playing time. In the Detroit Lions’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he notched five tackles and an interception, according to NFL research, so he’s a solid addition to the active roster.
The Lions waived Maulet in late November when the team brought back Khalil Dorsey from injured reserve and needed to add tight end Anthony Firkser and receiver Tom Kennedy to the active roster.
Detroit Lions Riding High on a Big Win
The Detroit Lions are still riding high on their 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, December 4, which improved their record to 8-5 and helped their case in the NFC North. It was a must-win for the team, and it improved the Lions’ chances of getting to the postseason to 52%, according to NFL research. Without that win, it would be have nearly impossible for the Lions to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The win over the Dallas Cowboys also moved the Lions closer to the Chicago Bears in the NFC North standings. Even though Detroit is still No. 3, they’re only a game behind the Bears. The Green Bay Packers‘ strength went up after their win over the Bears.
After the game, Campbell praised the Lions for their efforts, stating, “The guys really stepped up. But we did, we played complementary football. That, above all, is what really makes the difference. That’s what good teams do.”
He added, “It doesn’t matter how good your offense, your defense is – if you’re not able to help each other out when you need it with one of the phases, it’s tough. It makes it tough and we were able to do that today.”
