The pro wrestling universe will bid goodbye to John Cena this weekend during “WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event,” when the 17-time world champion will square off against “The Ring General” GUNTHER.
The show will emanate from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., with reports indicating that a number of celebrities, including U.S. President Donald Trump and disgraced WWE founder Vince McMahon, could be in attendance to bid goodbye to the wrestling legend. The match will mark Cena’s 18th of 2025, after he began his retirement tour at the Royal Rumble and went on to face some of his famed rivals, such as Randy Orton, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar and A.J. Styles, at various events.
GUNTHER earned the honor of being in John Cena’s last match after winning the “Last Time is Now Tournament” over the past month or so. The Austrian wrestler retired another pro wrestling icon, Bill Goldberg, earlier this year.

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event
In interviews leading up to his farewell match, Cena has suggested that he wants his last night in the WWE to showcase the future stars of the wrestling business. That’s precisely why the SNME card will include “WWE NXT” stars such as Oba Femi, Sol Ruca and Je’Von Evans in various matchups.
Full card of the “WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event” main show:
- Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT Champion Oba Femi
- Bayley vs. Sol Ruca
- AJ Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater
- John Cena vs. GUNTHER
There were earlier rumors that the Cena versus GUNTHER match would open the festivities in Saturday’s show. However, Cena debunked that rumor during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on the eve of his final match.
“We’re going last and I don’t know how that rumor started,” he said, via PWTorch.
“I was on Jimmy Kimmel, I said I’m ending the show,” continued Cena. “I said I normally go to bed early, but I’m going to stay up late for this one. I guess people didn’t read between the tea leaves. Like, we’re last. I don’t even know how that started.
“It’s difficult to conceptualize that. Again, I don’t make the menu. And if, gosh, if I show up tomorrow and they want me to go on first, well that’s what I’m going to do, but we are last at this point.”
