Julio Vasquez-Gonzalez, 18, died Sunday morning from his injuries, according to a news release from the Lakewood Police Department.
The driver accused of hitting the school bus, 22-year-old Andrew Logan Miller of Denver, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of vehicular assault, child abuse, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and speeding 40 mph or more over the limit, according to the department.
As of Sunday, investigators were discussing additional charges with the District Attorney’s Office, including vehicular homicide, police said.
More than a dozenn student athletes and several coaches from Grand Junction’s Central High School in Mesa County were on board the school bus when the crash happened, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, police said. The team was in the Denver area for a wrestling tournament.
The bus driver was turning left onto West Sixth Avenue from northbound Kipling Street when it was hit by an SUV speeding south on Kipling, police said.
A total of 16 people were injured in the crash, including students, coaches and people inside the SUV, police said. Several victims from both vehicles remained hospitalized Sunday.
