The Cleveland Browns appear set to roll with Shedeur Sanders at quarterback for the foreseeable future.
Cleveland named Sanders the starter for the rest of the season, but it is widely expected that the team will draft its franchise quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, it appears Cleveland could remain with Sanders in 2026, according to insider Mary Kay Cabot.
“I think he’s shown enough traits now that there’s something to this young man and something worth building on here,” Cabot said on 92.3 The Fan. “He’s done some remarkable things already, despite the fact that he didn’t start practicing with the starters before his first start four weeks ago.
“There’s something here. I think the Browns are going to conclude at the end of the four-game stretch, the seven starts for seven starters for Shedeur Sanders, I just have a feeling that they’re going to analyze the whole thing and decide they want to move forward with him. I can’t say for sure, yet. But it sort of has that vibe, feels like it’s almost kind of trending in that direction.”
If the Browns do end up keeping Sanders as their starting quarterback in 2026, it would be a bit of a surprise. But, Cabot believes the rookie quarterback has shown enough and has support in the building to have a full offseason to be the starter.
However, Sanders is coming off a horrible outing against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. He went 18-of-35 for 177 yards and three interceptions.
Sanders Isn’t Worried About Future
Although Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Sanders will remain the starter for the rest of the season, some fans wondered if he’d be benched after his three-interception performance.
Sanders struggled on Sunday, but he said he isn’t thinking about being demoted.
“You know what league we’re in?” Sanders said. “You can lose your job at any point in time. So you don’t play with fear. When you live and play in fear, then you’ll never be yourself. So I don’t play or live in fear.
“Whatever situation I’m in, I’m in. Whatever happens, it happens. But I live each moment and try to live each day in the fullest. So never live and worry or fear.”
Sanders made some poor throws against the Bears, and it’s a game that he thinks he can learn from. He also knows the Bears have a tough defensive scheme and enjoyed playing against them.
“They had a great defensive scheme, and I enjoyed playing against them,” Sanders said. “I enjoyed playing in that because it was definitely a little challenge, so I look forward to learning from that and look forward to understanding exactly how things were on film.”
Stefanski Expects Sanders to be Better
Although the Browns will be remaining with Sanders at quarterback, the coach knows rough patches will happen.
However, Stefanski said it’s a game that Sanders will learn from, which will help him be better next week.
“I’m obviously thinking about just this game and those type of things,” Stefanski said. “He’s a young player that’s making progress, like we’ve talked about all week. I see it in games. I get to see it in practice. There’s going to be ups and downs to young players, particularly the quarterback position. So we’ll learn from it, and we’ll be better next week.”
The Browns will host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
