Nick Reiner, son of the late director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, penned a semi-autobiographical screenplay in 2015.
The film, “Being Charlie,” was later directed by his famous father and starred actor Nick Robinson as the titular character.
Nick Robinson Shares Tribute to Rob Reiner
Shortly after news of Rob Reiner’s passing began to circulate, Robinsonâwho portrayed the character loosely based on Reiner’s sonâshared a touching tribute.
“RIP Rob Reiner,” Robinson shared via Instagram on Monday, December 15. “He showed me so much kindness and grace as a young actor. An incredible artist with such a capacity for empathy and warmth.”
Robinson’s message was shared with a photo of the director wearing a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim jersey.
Nick Robinson Later Starred in ‘Love, Simon’
Robinson, who got his start in Hollywood with a role in “Melissa and Joey,” would later land the titular role in the beloved 2018 film, “Love, Simon.”
“One of the things that I think Simon does is that he’s extremely self-aware, basically to a fault, to the point where he is suppressing his own personality out of fear of anyone finding a little tick or inclination that might be perceived as gay,” Robinson explained in an interview with GQ at the time. “He’s very polite, he’s very nice, but he’s also editing himself constantly, and that, I think, can leave you cold.”
Nick Robinson Chose Acting Over College
The “Jurassic World” star was accepted into New York University’s College of Arts and Sciences before landing the role in “Melissa and Joey.”
“I’m still not sure what I want to do, but I just got my class schedule and everythingâit’s all locked in,” he told Teen Vogue in 2015. “It takes a semester at least to get adjusted, but then I should be able to balance acting and school. It was always an expectation, and I’ve always wanted to go to college, so I’m taking some time to go have fun at NYU in New York. Right now my class schedule is interdisciplinary seminars, but then cinema studies and psych and things like that.”
He ultimately decided to defer his freshman year. But when his career took off, Robinson reportedly did not return to NYU.
Nick Robinson Portrayed Nick Reiner’s Titular Character
A young Robinson was cast to play Charlie Mills in 2016’s “Being Charlie.”
The film was written by Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, largely based on his life and battles with substance abuse.
“I’m also the pain in the rear. But it’s a lot of stuff I experienced,” Nick Reiner said in a 2016 interview with NPR. “And a lot of stuff that we witnessed people say and talk about.”
“It’s a piece of fiction, but it’s drawn from our lives,” the “Princess Bride” director added.
Nick Reiner was arrested in connection with the deaths of his parents on Sunday, December 14. He was charged with a felony and is being held on $4 million bail.
