Bad News Keeps Coming for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes After Disastrous Injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will watch from home as his team finishes out the regular season as lame ducks, having been eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in more than a decade.

Mahomes will also have to watch as the chance of setting NFL history fades away. The Chiefs quarterback had a chance to reach some historic marks, but instead has already seen one division rival take away a record and will see other chances at history fade away.

Patrick Mahomes Loses Spot in NFL Record Books

Even before he suffered a torn ACL in the closing moments of Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes saw a rival steal his spot in the NFL record books. As the NFL announced, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert passed up Mahomes on a key passing metric.

“Justin Herbert passes Patrick Mahomes for the 2nd-most pass yards by a player in their first 6 NFL seasons all-time,” the league noted in a post on X.

Herbert has the chance to set the all-time record for yards in the first six seasons. StatMuse noted that Herbert is 601 yards behind Peyton Manning for the record, which would allow him to pass the record if he can average just over 200 passing yards over his final three games.

Mahomes will see more chances at NFL history fade away. The loss knocked the Chiefs out of playoff contention and ended their bid to tie the record for consecutive Super Bowl appearances. The rival Buffalo Bills will see their record of four straight appearances hold as the Chiefs head to a long offseason.

Patrick Mahomes Looking at Long Absence

The Chiefs announced on Monday that Mahomes had already undergone surgery to repair his torn ACL and LCL. As ESPN’s Nate Taylor noted, the recovery period will put Mahomes in danger of missing the start of the 2026 season.

“The typical recovery for such an injury is about nine months, meaning Mahomes will miss the team’s offseason program, and his availability for the start of next season is in question,” Taylor wrote. “The 2026 NFL season opener is Sept. 10.”

As Taylor noted, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was optimistic that Mahomes would progress through his rehab process and come back strong next season.

“He’ll attack it, just like he does everything else,” Reid said. “There have been some pretty good quarterbacks who have had the same injury, and they’ve done pretty well after they came back. He’ll get after it, and he’s got good people here to rehab him. He’ll be right on top of all of that.”

The injury may have robbed Mahomes of more history — the chance to play with future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce one more time. Kelce has faced growing retirement rumors and will see his contract with the Chiefs expire at the end of the season. While the tight end has not spoken about his plans for the future, ESPN’s Adam Schefter hinted on Monday that retirement could be a likely outcome for Kelce.
