The Boston Red Sox were hellbent on getting Pete Alonso to upgrade their first base spot but lost him to the AL East rival Baltimore Orioles.
Fans of incumbent first baseman Triston Casas might have noticed the team seeming to forget about him. But baseball czar Craig Breslow hasn’t forgotten Casas and referenced why the Sox may want to ease him back into their infield in 2026.
Casas, of course, has been the Red Sox’s primary first baseman in the past. He hit 24 home runs with 65 RBIs and an .856 OPS in 502 plate appearances in 2023 as a 23-year-old.
But he has missed significant time in consecutive seasons. He only logged 99 at-bats in 2025 due to his torn patellar tendon, which was sustained while running the bases against the Minnesota Twins on May 2.
Casas slashed .182/.277/.303 with a minus-0.9 bWAR in 2025
Triston Casas ‘Could Be’ The Red Sox’s Opening Day First Baseman
The Red Sox are still trying to navigate their offseason after missing out on both Alonso and Kyle Schwarber and after they let go of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. Boston has been tied to Cody Bellinger too, since he can play both the outfield and first base in a pinch.
But Casas is there too, and he still is only about to turn 26 years of age. But Boston is tamping down its expectations for Casas due to the injury, even though Breslow pointed out he could be healthy in time for Opening Day.
âHe could, for sure,â Breslow told Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. âI donât want to get too far out in front of ourselves, but heâs a guy who, when heâs on the field, heâs had the ability to impact the game. He just has not, unfortunately, been on the field.â
McCaffrey noted the Red Sox’s willingness to acknowledge Casas’ minor-league options, which means he could also start in Triple-A. But even though the Sox aren’t committing to Casas, they still like his tools and Breslow noted he will need them at some point.
âItâs not about our confidence in his baseball ability,â Breslow said. âHeâs got the same talent that he had: the ability to manage the strike zone, to hit the ball out of the park. We need that. Weâre going to need that. We just donât want to overly pressurize the situation for guys coming back from a pretty significant injury.â
The Red Sox Are Interested In Eugenio Suarez, Willson Contreras
Boston is looking for the ever-elusive right-handed-hitting power hitting, especially since third baseman Alex Bregman is on the open market after spending a year in Boston.
But Boston, who already upgraded its pitching via the Sonny Gray trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, may again target the Cardinals to bolster its offense. Willson Contreras, who will turn 34 in May but has a .811 career OPS, is on Boston’s radar, potentially to platoon with Casas and serve as its right-handed DH option.
Contreras slashed .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs for the offensively deficient Cardinals last year.
If the Red Sox miss out on re-signing Bregman, they could pivot to veteran third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who also is a free agent. Suarez clubbed 49 homers in 588 at-bats in 2025 split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners and hit three more dingers in the postseason, helping them advance to Game 7 of the ALCS.
