Passenger killed in San Jose hit-and-run, driver arrested

SAN JOSE – A woman was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after a man jumped out of her moving car and was killed over the weekend in San Jose, police said.

The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4900 block of McCoy Avenue, near Grandby Drive, San Jose police Officer Tanya Hernandez said in a news release.

Officers arrived to find the man in the eastbound lane of McCoy Avenue suffering from major injuries, Hernandez said. The man, she added, died of his injuries at the scene.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Detectives determined the man was riding as a passenger in a black 2018 Chevrolet Volt traveling eastbound on McCoy Avenue when he “exited the vehicle,” according to Hernandez. The driver, identified only as a woman, did not stop at the scene.

On Monday, detectives tracked down the driver in Sunnyvale, Hernandez said. She was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and booked into Santa Clara County jail.

The death marks the city’s 38th traffic fatality of the year. San Jose had recorded 47 deaths at the same point in 2024.
