Several details have leaked around the next Call Of Duty title from Sledgehammer Games, but the various insiders don’t agree on everything.

Call Of Duty games are known for leaking years in advance, to the point where we usually know what’s planned for the next two instalments at any given time.

Next year’s Call Of Duty, based on leaks, is set be a sequel to Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from Infinity Ward. The campaign will apparently revolve around Korea, while the multiplayer will allegedly crib from 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, although Infinity Ward have rebuked that suggestion.

Considering the usual developer rotation on the series, it was assumed the following entry in 2027 would be helmed by Sledgehammer Games, whose last game was the widely derided Modern Warfare 3 in 2023.

Several insiders have now confirmed this to be the case, along with a number of other details about the game – albeit with some conflicting reports when it comes to the setting.

According to renowned Call Of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope, Sledgehammer’s 2027 game will be a new sub-franchise ‘with completely new characters set in the late 1990s/early 2000s’.

They claim omnimovement, which debuted in Black Ops 6, is planned for the title albeit, but not tactical sprint. Zombiesis ‘currently still not planned to return’, but the Pick 10 loadout customisation system, and Get High platforming race mode, will apparently make a comeback.

This prompted an indirect response from Call Of Duty fan site CharlieIntel, who refuted the game’s alleged setting.

‘We have heard that Sledgehammer Games’ 2027 Call Of Duty title does not take place during the late 90s/early 2000s, despite some rumours today,’ they wrote on X. ‘Per the latest reports, it’s a new sub-franchise set in the modern era.’

If the latter is to be believed, another sub-franchise in the ‘modern era’ doesn’t exactly sound appealing when Modern Warfare already exists – especially as the series already has a fatigue problem between its yearly instalments.

This isn’t the first time TheGhostOfHope has been contradicted over the past month. Activision and Xbox representatives, via CharlieIntel, denied his claims that Microsoft is considering studio mergers within Activision as part of a ‘rethink’ around the series’ financial model.

Similarly, Infinity Ward has denied his assertions that the multiplayer for Modern Warfare 4 will be very similar to their last title, although using very ambiguous language.

It’s difficult to gauge who to believe exactly, but it is notable that Activision has only responded to negative leaks around Call Of Duty (they haven’t denied next year’s entry will be set around Korea, for example). This comes at a time when the latest entry, Black Ops 7, underperformed financially after Battlefield 6 stole its thunder.

TheGhostOfHope has defended himself in light of the rebuttals, admitting that while his leaks have sometimes been wrong in the past, his track record stems back years.

‘I have leaked a ton of things about Vanguard, MW2, MW3, BO6, BO7 before anybody else,’ he wrote on X. ‘Have I gotten some things wrong in the past? Sure, no doubt about it and I will own that. But the idea that I make s*** up or that I do this with hate in my heart, like some people in the replies like to imply, is not true at all.

‘The fact that a billion dollar studio has gone out of its way to *generically* deny two of my most recent leaks, when they’ve never done it before nor towards others, is frankly very weird and should raise some red flags about why they’d do such a thing when they never did it before.

‘I have largely kept the same sources for years and my MW4 leak is no different to that. I would never sink my reputation with COD leaking that I’ve built over the years on faulty unverified info.’

The leaker hasn’t responded to CharlieIntel’s contradictory report on the next game from Sledgehammer, but he did the post the ‘this is fine’ dog in a burning house meme shortly afterwards.

At the end of the day though the only argument over the 2027 game seems to be whether it’s set in the 2000s or 2020s, with both sources agreeing it’s a new sub-franchise and not a Modern Warfare or Black Ops title.

Call Of Duty had a rough ride in 2025, following increased competition from Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders, but it might be even worse next year – as GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, the same window Call Of Duty traditionally drops.
