The New York Mets are starting to heat up this offseason in terms of making notable free agent signings. After losing two star players in Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso to other contenders, the Mets have made a few signings of their own, which include reaching a two-year deal with reliever Luke Weaver this week.
Other deals David Stears has coordinated were a two-year, $40 million deal with Jorge Polanco and a three-year deal with Devin Williams. The Mets still have work to do, like adding another outfielder to pair with Juan Soto after Brandon Nimmo was traded. A recent prediction has the Mets landing two-time All-Star and former MVP Cody Bellinger.

Mets Predicted to Land Cody Bellinger
This would be a big splash for the Mets, and yet another instance of the team from Queens poaching another New York Yankees star.
Cody Bellinger is coming off another highly productive season at the plate. He smashed 29 home runs, drove in 98 runs, and had an OPS+ of 125 with the Yankees this past season. Bellinger hasn’t hit more than 28 home runs since 2019, when he won the NL MVP with the Dodgers.
A recent prediction by ESPN.com’s David Shoenfield has the New York Mets landing Cody Bellinger on a six-year, $180 million deal.

Bellinger is listed as the third-best option remaining in free agency by ESPN. Shoenfield notes that the Mets are putting an emphasis on defense this season, and they’ve already put that plan into action by trading for Marcus Semien. Cody Bellinger can play all three outfield positions and even first base. The  Mets have a sudden need for a first baseman after letting Pete Alonso walk in free agency.
The outfield hole for the Mets is glaring, and if they are unable to land top free agent Kyle Tucker, Bellinger is the next best option.

Cody Bellinger Would be a Valuable Addition
Cody Bellinger had a bWAR of 5.1 in 2025 and likely benefited from hitting in Yankee Stadium, hence the reason his home run total was his highest since 2019. He is a two-time All-Star, 2X Silver Slugger, Gold Glove winner, and 2020 World Series champion.
An important part of the Bellinger free agency equation is the fact that he’s represented by Scott Boras, who is notorious for drawing out the market on his clients to garner the best return.
According to BaseballReference.com, Bellinger is projected to hit 23 home runs in 2026 with a .274 average and .797 OPS.
Bellinger is entering his age-30 season, and given his defensive value and some other underlying metrics, it will be interesting to see if the Mets would be willing to offer Bellinger more than Pete Alonso, who landed a $155 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles.
