The New Orleans Pelicans aren’t going anywhere fast. The team has continued to lose games, along with a number of players due to injury. With that in mind, the trade winds may start blowing.
With rumors that the Miami Heat may be gauging trade interest for Andrew Wiggins, perhaps acquiring the veteran forward could be in the cards in The Big Easy.
Trey Murphy is somebody that the team may opt to move on from and try to acquire assets for. These two teams could conduct a deal that would benefit both teams.
Wiggins, a champion with the Golden State Warriors, would go from the Heat to the Pelicans, while Trey Murphy would head to Miami.
There will of course be some draft compensation here, so let’s get into it.
Full Trey Murphy for Andrew Wiggins Swap Details
The Heat would be acquiring a win-now player in Trey Murphy, who would instantly make them even more dangerous. The scoring ability of the fifth-year forward has been on display the last few seasons. This marks a second consecutive campaign with a 21+ point per game average.
One of the best three-point shooters in the league, Murphy would pair beautifully next to Norman Powell and Tyler Herro.
On the other side of things, it would make sense to bring Andrew Wiggins into New Orleans. The forward does have a player option for next season, and the team he would be joining could be a in a position to compete for a playoff spot in a year.
Wiggins would bring much-needed veteran leadership, while also joining his former teammate Kevon Looney. Turning 31 in February, he still has plenty left in the tank, and could bring necessary intangibles to his new squad.
With Murphy being younger and under long-term control, it will take a bit more than just a capable starter to come in.
The full deal would send Wiggins, a 2026 1st-round pick, and a 2028 1st-round pick to New Orleans. This would also help recoup the selection they traded to Atlanta, while providing another asset with which to make a summer move.
Trey Murphy Takes Heat to Next Level
Coming off a 1st-round exit via sweep against the Cleveland Cavaliers a season ago, the Miami Heat knew they needed to make changes. Adding Norman Powell has given the offensive a serious lift. Davion Mitchell, who re-upped over the summer, has continued to provide toughness and playmaking.
Bringing Trey Murphy into the mix would give the team the next-level scorer they are looking for, while also keeping the defense competitive. A possible five-man lineup could feature Murphy at the three, with Kel’el Ware and Bam Adebayo next to him up front. Tyler Herro, and Powell in the backcourt.
This would put Miami in a position, with the East pretty wide open this season, to make a deep run in the postseason.
As for the Pelicans, who don’t own their own pick, there is no incentive to tank. Andrew Wiggins provides some athleticism, and a lob threat for Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears.
While it is hard to say what the end-of-season roster looks like for New Orleans, Wiggins would be a welcome addition on the floor, and voice in the locker room.
