Another starter bites the dust.
The New York Jets announced on Thursday, December 18, that they have placed starting safety Tony Adams on injured reserve. With only three games remaining in the 2025 regular season, this officially ends Adams’ season.
In a corresponding roster move, the Jets announced that they have signed rookie defensive tackle Payton Page to the 53-man roster.
How Many More Injuries Can This Team Take?
This has been a season from hell for the Jets.
They’re 3-11, missed the playoffs for a 15th straight year, and have suffered countless devastating injuries.
The Jets currently have 14 players on IR. That group includes multiple starting wide receivers (Garrett Wilson and Josh Reynolds), multiple starting defensive backs (Andre Cisco, Azareye’h Thomas, Isaiah Oliver, and Adams), and what was a key pillar of the starting O-Line (Alijah Vera-Tucker).
“Adams (5-11, 203) sustained a groin injury in the second quarter of the Jets’ Week 15 loss to the Jaguars. Adams has appeared in 12 games (9 starts) for the Green & White this season, recording 49 total tackles, 1 sack and 5 pass defenses,” Jets editorial contributor Susanna Weir wrote in a press release.
The Jets Turn the Page
With Adams removed from the picture, that opened up a roster spot. The Jets decided to give a youngster a chance.
Page, 23, originally joined the Jets roster as an undrafted free agent back in May. He didn’t make the 53-man roster initially, but he was brought back on the P-Squad.
“Page (6-4, 300) signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in May. The Clemson product was a one-year starter and team captain for the Tigers, totaling 32 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2 pass defenses and an INT in the 2024 season. Page had 3 tackles and 1 sack in the preseason for the Green & White, and he was added to the Jets’ practice squad on Aug. 27. Page was elevated for the Green & White’s Week 8 game against the Bengals and Week 10 game against the Browns. He has played 5 defensive snaps and 9 special teams snaps this season,” Jets editorial contributor Susanna Weir wrote in a press release.
Jermaine Johnson reacted on social media by saying, “Yea P!!!!!”
Injury Report Update Ahead of Week 16
Three players haven’t practiced this week for the Jets. That list includes rookie linebacker Francisco Mauigoa (neck), rookie tight end Mason Taylor (neck), and defensive lineman Eric Watts (concussion).
That isn’t surprising news because on Wednesday, head coach Aaron Glenn already confirmed those three players were ruled out for the Week 16 road trip to play the New Orleans Saints.
Two players have been limited participants through the first two days of practice: Justin Fields (knee) and Tyrod Taylor (groin/knee). Coach Glenn said whoever is healthier between the two will serve as the QB2 behind Brady Cook on Sunday.
If neither is available, the Jets would have to turn to the new kid on the block. On Thursday, December 18, the Jets confirmed that they have signed quarterback Hendon Hooker to the practice squad.
For Hooker to be up and ready in a matter of days seems unrealistic. He worked out for the team on Thursday.
The good news is Hooker crossed over with Coach Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand with the Detroit Lions. So he should have a grasp of the playbook if it came to that kind of emergency situation.
