The New York Giants are adding another pass-catching option ahead of their penultimate home game of the 2025 season.
New York signed tight end Tanner Conner to its practice squad ahead of its Week 16 home game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Conner was waived by the Miami Dolphins earlier this season despite putting up career highs in receiving yards (91) and receptions (9) this season.
A 6-3, 237-pound converted wide receiver from Kent, Wash., Conner is a fourth-year undrafted player out of Idaho State.
Tanner Conner Brings Experience, Athleticism
Conner was in the midst of a career season before he had the rug pulled out from under him in Miami. He had been up and down from Miami’s practice squad to its active roster, though it doesn’t seem he was properly deployed by Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
Conner was both a football player and a track athlete at Idaho State, participating in the 100-meter, 110-meter hurdles and the 4×100 relay aside from earning All-Big Sky Team honors his junior year in Pocatello.
We’ll see whether Conner ends up getting promoted to the active roster at some point before the season ends next month, since he will need to get up to speed with Mike Kafka’s offense.
But the Giants are clearly devoid of athletic pass catchers, particularly with Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers out for the season due to injury. It would certainly be worth a look to see how Conner plays over the final three games.
The Giants Seem To Be Hoarding Tight Ends
Tight end Theo Johnson has been one of the rare Giants bright spots this season. Johnson is second to Wan’Dale Robinson in catches (45) and receiving yards (528) and leads New York with five touchdown catches.
But Johnson must be noticing the Giants’ tight-ends room is getting awfully crowded these days.
Aside from the three tight ends on the active roster — Johnson and veterans Daniel Bellinger and Chris Manhertz — the Giants now have three more tight ends on their practice squad with the addition of Conner.
Aside from Conner, the Giants are holding roster spots for Zach Davidson and Maximillian Mang. Mang is the only rookie of the bunch, since the German-born prospect is being stashed while learning the game. Davidson is in his third season but hasn’t played in a game since 2024.
Manhertz is the No. 3 blocking tight end, since he has just one catch, on his only target, for seven yards this season. But Conner may be in a position to challenge Bellinger, who is also a 2022 draft prospect but is more of a hybrid blocking-catching tight end aided by his own 6-6, 255-pound frame.
Plus, Bellinger is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract and is poised to become a free agent that the Giants are unlikely to retain. He is averaging just 15 receiving yards per game in his 59-game NFL career with the Giants and has never become the receiving threat they hoped when they chose him in the fourth round (No. 112) of the 2022 NFL Draft.
